The Hidden Stress Children Carry
Part 2
Children today experience a surprising amount of stress. Busy schedules, academic pressure, social challenges, sensory overload and big emotions can all build up quietly.

Many children try hard to cope on their own, especially if they don’t want to worry the adults around them. Over time, this stress can turn into anxiety.

Sometimes, what children need most is not fixing but space, safety and understanding.

If you work with or care for children, take a moment to pause and notice what stress might be sitting underneath their behaviour.

Maybe this season isn’t about pushing forward or setting big goals.
Maybe it’s about slowing down, breathing and taking care of what’s already here.

If this moment feels familiar, you might be ready for a little support.
Gentle, unhurried and at your own pace.

Child Anxiety – It’s More Common Than We Think
Part 1

Child anxiety is becoming increasingly common and often it isn’t caused by one single event. Many children carry quiet worries about school, friendships, expectations or changes at home.

Anxiety can often show up as tummy aches, tears, anger, withdrawal or sleep difficulties. These behaviours are a child’s way of saying “I’m struggling” even when they don’t have the words.

Noticing these signs early and responding with curiosity and compassion can make a real difference.

If this resonates with you, you’re welcome to follow my page for gentle insights into children’s emotional wellbeing.

A Gentle Series on Child Anxiety

In my work with children and families, I often see how anxiety doesn’t arrive loudly. It builds quietly, through worries about school, friendships, expectations and big feelings that children don’t always have the words for.

Over my next few posts, I’ll be sharing some thoughts around child anxiety, the stress that often sits underneath it and the small, compassionate ways we can support children to feel safer, calmer and more understood.

This series is for parents, carers, schools and anyone who works with children and wants to support them with kindness and understanding rather than pressure.

If this feels familiar, you’re very welcome to follow along, reflect or reach out for a gentle conversation.

Emotional Wellbeing Support for Children

At Small Wonders, I offer gentle emotional wellbeing support for children across Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. I work with children who may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed or struggling with big feelings or changes in their lives.

My sessions are calm, nurturing and led by the child. Using creative and therapeutic approaches, I help children explore their feelings, feel listened to and develop ways to manage emotions in a safe and supportive space. Everything moves at a pace that feels comfortable for the child, with trust and reassurance at the centre of our work together.

A gentle reminder about the importance of early emotional support for children, young people and young adults.

Many children and young people don’t show their struggles in obvious ways. Instead of big behaviours, we often see withdrawal, shutdown, overwhelm, anxiety or emotional exhaustion, especially when life feels too much for them to manage alone.

Seeking support early doesn’t mean something is “wrong”. It simply means noticing that a child, young person or young adult may need a little extra help to understand their feelings, build coping strategies and feel more secure before difficulties become more entrenched or reach crisis point.

Early support can help children, young people and young adults:
• make sense of overwhelming emotions
• feel heard and understood
• build emotional resilience and self-regulation
• prevent smaller worries from becoming much bigger ones

If you’re a parent, carer or a young adult with a niggling concern, trusting that instinct can be an important first step.

If it’s helpful, I offer emotional wellbeing support for children, young people and young adults and I’m always happy to talk things through or help point families in the right direction.

Your child might not be able to tell you what’s wrong.
But they may be drawing it.
Many children don’t have the words for big feelings yet.
Instead of saying “I’m worried” or “I don’t feel safe”, those feelings can show up in their drawings.

•A very small person on the page.
•Dark colours that keep appearing.
•Pictures that feel heavy or full of emotion.

In Drawing & Talking therapy, these drawings aren’t judged or analysed. They’re gently noticed.
The picture gives your child a safe way to express what’s going on inside, without pressure, questions or needing to explain.
For many children, drawing feels safer than talking.
And once they feel understood through their pictures, words often follow in their own time.

If your child is struggling to open up,
this gentle approach can help them feel seen and heard.

Support doesn’t have to start with talking.

As the last few days of the Christmas holidays slip by, many children are beginning to think about returning to school.
For some, this brings excitement and routine. For others, it can stir up worries, big feelings or nerves about a new term or new expectations.

Taking time now to talk and gently prepare can really help children feel more settled and supported as they transition back.

At Small Wonders, I offer a calm, nurturing space where children can explore their feelings safely and build emotional confidence for the term ahead. Support is available as we move into the new year, you don’t have to wait until worries feel overwhelming.
