Ayurveda explains that we are all made up of the five great elements, only the ratio of the five elements in us is different. What are these five elements then and what do they represent you ask? Well, read on....

🌌 Akasha (Space Element)

Aakash mahabhuta (Space) is present in the voids within the body such as the nostrils, mouth and abdomen. Representing consciousnes, it symbolises boundless potential, divine connection, and expansive awareness. ✨

🌬️ Vayu (Air Element)

Vayu mahabhuta (Air) causes all subtle movements in the body such as breathing, nerve transmission as well as gross movements such as walking. Representing freedom, movement, and inspiration, it teaches us to keep moving, to embrace change, and let go of what no longer serves us.

🔥 Agni (Fire Element)

Agni mahabhuta (Fire) controls digestion, metabolism and corresponds to intelligence. Symbolising energy, creativity, and drive, Agni fuels our desires, our inner fire, and guides us to manifest our dreams.

🌊 Jala (Water Element)

Jala mahabhuta (Water) is present in all bodily fluids, including saliva, plasma, and digestive juices. Jala represents fluidity, purification, emotions and enables us to reconnect with our intuitive wisdom as we navigate life's currents.

🌍 Prithvi (Earth Element) 🌍

Prithvi mahabhuta (Earth) is represented in the structure of the body, including the bones, teeth, flesh, and hair. Prithvi symbolises strength, nurturing, and manifestation. It provides stability and abundance, just like a mighty oak rooted in the earth.

Ayurveda is a 5,000 year-old system of healing originating in India and still thriving today. Why? It works!
If you’re already practicing Ayurveda, you know first-hand how this profound health science improves your life. But for those of us just starting to crack its surface and contemplating diving deeper, the ancient wisdom might seem vast & intimidating. You may be wondering – what does it accomplish? What makes it special?

⚡️ A health system born from Nature - The Ayurvedic approach is rooted in Nature’s elements and principles, and Ayurvedic solutions will help you to better align with Nature. Ayurveda translates to “the science” (or wisdom, knowledge) of “life” – and this applies to all the life, as we know it, in our Universe.

⚡️A greater understanding of self - Ayurveda provides incredible insights into who you are (your "PRAKRUTI" - keep an eye out for an informative post on this concept soon), why you make the choices that you make and how they impact your health. This understanding is worth gold when it comes to improving health as it allows for an individualised approach to healing and not a one size fits all approach. With this understanding, we learn to make conscious food, lifestyle choices that support our individual healing.

⚡️A roadmap to living sustainably - When we align ourselves with Nature, we develop an innate sense of what is sustainable. “Sustainable” is a buzzword we’ve all heard by now, but what does it really mean? According to Ayurveda, anything that taxes the system – that counters the support of life – is unsustainable. We don’t strive for perfection in Ayurveda (for that can cause more stress!), but we do learn to evolve our daily lifestyles and orient ourselves towards the choices which best support all aspects of our lives – physical, mental, emotional health. The result is lasting solutions instead of short term, quick fixes.

So, if you are thinking about dipping a toe into the world of Ayurveda, don't think twice. It will single handedly be the best decision you make for yourself.

🔱🕉️ In 2011, I took my first Ashtanga class. I remember it being ridiculously hard. I remember thinking WOW… this practice can really help me. I also dreamt a little that day - that I would like to teach. I was however so unfit at that time with serious health challenges that I knew it would take a while to realise this dream.

Over the last 13 years, Ashtanga has challenged me immensely. The fact that the practice did not (and still does not) come easy to me and I have to work my butt off is probably what draws me to it. If it came too easy I probably wouldn’t appreciate it. Many times I thought I don’t want to do this anymore. My teacher would say… “WHAT’S THE ALTERNATIVE?”.

I’m not the most advanced yogi around but through my years of graft, I have developed an immense respect for this practice. And I am here to tell you that this practice has immense healing power. For it is because of Ashtanga (and Ayurveda) that I have avoided spinal surgery and a lifetime of painkillers and steroids.

I feel extremely humbled that I have qualified to teach. I hope to teach with the same authenticity as my teacher, keeping true to the tradition and lineage of Ashtanga.

None of this would not have been possible without the support of my teacher Dan Burt of to whom I am eternally grateful. Thank you for teaching me to be a student and a teacher. I have big footsteps to follow and I will do my best.

Special thanks and much love also to Dionne Moy - thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us over the last year.

As I still process the fact that my dream has came true, the seeker in me wonders was this dream a part of a bigger dream……?
