Ksheeradhara — an Ayurvedic therapy for cooling the mind and body.

A form of Shirodhara where, instead of oil, milk infused with cooling herbs such as Vetiver and Sarsaparilla is poured in a gentle, continuous, pendulum-like motion over the forehead.

A profound treatment that is traditionally used to calm the system, particularly in conditions associated with Pitta imbalance (excessive heat and inflammation).

Being Pitta-dominant, I have personally benefited from this treatment over the years. The intensity of excess Pitta can cloud the mind and affect clarity. Ksheeradhara helps to cool the mind and body, allowing a sense of calm and restfulness to emerge.

It is often administered over several consecutive days, depending on the individual and the condition.

Not everything suits everyone. Understanding your Prakruti is where Ayurvedic care begins.

An Ayurvedic consultation enables a deeper understanding of your body and how it functions.

“Akanksha has helped me address my digestive and skin issues by working at the root cause. Through the process, I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of my health.

Her approach includes diet and lifestyle guidance tailored to my constitution, along with personalised herbs, herbal supplements, and oils.

Following her advice has completely cleared the eczema on my face and body, improved my digestion, and supported my recovery in the postpartum period.

I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a more holistic approach to their health.”

Much of the work in Ayurveda happens before the treatment begins. Oils and herbs are carefully selected and prepared according to the needs of the individual.

Preparation is underway here to help a client experiencing severe back pain and hip stiffness.

Podikizhi, a classical treatment from Kerala, is being prepared. Poultices filled with Vata-reducing herbs are dipped in warm Sahacharadi Tailam (a medicated oil traditionally used for relieving pain and stiffness in the lower half of the body) and used for massage.

Treatment in Ayurveda always begins with a consultation, allowing therapies to be tailored to provide maximum benefit.

Self-medication is not advised. Please consult a qualified practitioner before using any herbal supplements.

🕉️ Perhaps it’s time for a re-introduction.

Hello! I am Akanksha Kalra — Ayurvedic Consultant based in Newcastle upon Tyne and Whitley Bay.

Operating discreetly since opening my Ayurveda practice in 2019, I have had the privilege of supporting hundreds of clients in the region in improving their health and wellbeing — from those looking to alleviate specific health concerns to those who simply wish to experience the deeply therapeutic treatments that Ayurveda offers.

I am not a fan of social media, as is probably evident from looking at this page.

Partly because working as a sole practitioner leaves very little time for it, but also because of the disturbance it often creates for the mental health of its users (including myself!). For those reasons, staying away from it has largely been a conscious choice.

But after recently receiving a Panchakarma and experiencing its incredible benefits for both body and mind, something feels different right now.

There is a sense of being called to use this space to share knowledge gathered over the past 15 years while studying Yoga and Ayurveda, and while working consistently to improve my own musculoskeletal health.

In the hope that it may inspire deeper exploration, this page will slowly begin to share educational insights from these two incredible sciences that Mother India has gifted the world.

If something here resonates and feels worth sharing, please do. It not only supports a small independent practice, it might also reach someone who truly needs it.

Arogya Parama Labha — Your health is your true wealth.

Om Shanti 🕉️

Ayurveda explains that we are all made up of the five great elements, only the ratio of the five elements in us is different. What are these five elements then and what do they represent you ask? Well, read on....

🌌 Akasha (Space Element)

Aakash mahabhuta (Space) is present in the voids within the body such as the nostrils, mouth and abdomen. Representing consciousnes, it symbolises boundless potential, divine connection, and expansive awareness. ✨

🌬️ Vayu (Air Element)

Vayu mahabhuta (Air) causes all subtle movements in the body such as breathing, nerve transmission as well as gross movements such as walking. Representing freedom, movement, and inspiration, it teaches us to keep moving, to embrace change, and let go of what no longer serves us.

🔥 Agni (Fire Element)

Agni mahabhuta (Fire) controls digestion, metabolism and corresponds to intelligence. Symbolising energy, creativity, and drive, Agni fuels our desires, our inner fire, and guides us to manifest our dreams.

🌊 Jala (Water Element)

Jala mahabhuta (Water) is present in all bodily fluids, including saliva, plasma, and digestive juices. Jala represents fluidity, purification, emotions and enables us to reconnect with our intuitive wisdom as we navigate life's currents.

🌍 Prithvi (Earth Element) 🌍

Prithvi mahabhuta (Earth) is represented in the structure of the body, including the bones, teeth, flesh, and hair. Prithvi symbolises strength, nurturing, and manifestation. It provides stability and abundance, just like a mighty oak rooted in the earth.

Ayurveda is a 5,000 year-old system of healing originating in India and still thriving today. Why? It works!
If you’re already practicing Ayurveda, you know first-hand how this profound health science improves your life. But for those of us just starting to crack its surface and contemplating diving deeper, the ancient wisdom might seem vast & intimidating. You may be wondering – what does it accomplish? What makes it special?

⚡️ A health system born from Nature - The Ayurvedic approach is rooted in Nature’s elements and principles, and Ayurvedic solutions will help you to better align with Nature. Ayurveda translates to “the science” (or wisdom, knowledge) of “life” – and this applies to all the life, as we know it, in our Universe.

⚡️A greater understanding of self - Ayurveda provides incredible insights into who you are (your "PRAKRUTI" - keep an eye out for an informative post on this concept soon), why you make the choices that you make and how they impact your health. This understanding is worth gold when it comes to improving health as it allows for an individualised approach to healing and not a one size fits all approach. With this understanding, we learn to make conscious food, lifestyle choices that support our individual healing.

⚡️A roadmap to living sustainably - When we align ourselves with Nature, we develop an innate sense of what is sustainable. “Sustainable” is a buzzword we’ve all heard by now, but what does it really mean? According to Ayurveda, anything that taxes the system – that counters the support of life – is unsustainable. We don’t strive for perfection in Ayurveda (for that can cause more stress!), but we do learn to evolve our daily lifestyles and orient ourselves towards the choices which best support all aspects of our lives – physical, mental, emotional health. The result is lasting solutions instead of short term, quick fixes.

So, if you are thinking about dipping a toe into the world of Ayurveda, don't think twice. It will single handedly be the best decision you make for yourself.

🔱🕉️ In 2011, I took my first Ashtanga class. I remember it being ridiculously hard. I remember thinking WOW… this practice can really help me. I also dreamt a little that day - that I would like to teach. I was however so unfit at that time with serious health challenges that I knew it would take a while to realise this dream.

Over the last 13 years, Ashtanga has challenged me immensely. The fact that the practice did not (and still does not) come easy to me and I have to work my butt off is probably what draws me to it. If it came too easy I probably wouldn’t appreciate it. Many times I thought I don’t want to do this anymore. My teacher would say… “WHAT’S THE ALTERNATIVE?”.

I’m not the most advanced yogi around but through my years of graft, I have developed an immense respect for this practice. And I am here to tell you that this practice has immense healing power. For it is because of Ashtanga (and Ayurveda) that I have avoided spinal surgery and a lifetime of painkillers and steroids.

I feel extremely humbled that I have qualified to teach. I hope to teach with the same authenticity as my teacher, keeping true to the tradition and lineage of Ashtanga.

None of this would not have been possible without the support of my teacher Dan Burt of to whom I am eternally grateful. Thank you for teaching me to be a student and a teacher. I have big footsteps to follow and I will do my best.

Special thanks and much love also to Dionne Moy - thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us over the last year.

As I still process the fact that my dream has came true, the seeker in me wonders was this dream a part of a bigger dream……?
