There are many strains of HPV. Some of these are high-risk and may lead to certain cancers, including cervical, pe**le and a**l.
This is why the NHS offers the HPV vaccine to boys and girls from the age of 12-13.

Even if you've had the HPV vaccine, it's very important that you attend your cervical screening when invited.
If you have received an invitation for cervical screening or missed your last appointment, don’t wait - contact your GP practice.

Eligible people can now receive cervical screening invitations and reminders via the NHS App. To get these, please download the NHS App and make sure your notifications are switched on. Find out more https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-app If you don’t wish to use the App, the NHS will attempt to contact you by text message or letter so, don’t worry, you won’t miss an invitation. From July 2025, most people who test HPV negative, will receive an invitation in 5 years’ time, instead of 3.

Now that we have a better test for HPV, how often people need to have cervical screening is changing in England from 1st July 2025. Women and people with a cervix aged 25-49 years who test HPV negative - meaning they are at very low risk of cervical cancer over the next 10 years - will be invited every 5 years instead of every 3.
