My boys adorably comment on my advertising poster every time they go past, often remarking “that’s Daddy at work”.

It is refreshing to have honest conversations with them as they ask questions. I think it helps better prepare them and is great to see them develop their understanding about life and death. I am so pleased that grief education will be entering the curriculum from September 2026- much needed.

It is the last day of Dying Matters Awareness Week. I make no apology for addressing the often uncomfortable subject of death, dying, funerals and bereavement. Talking about and sharing our thoughts will not make us die any sooner, but allows our loved ones to be better prepared to honour our wishes.

“When should I call you?”

I will personally answer your phone call anytime of the day or night.

Many people are surprised to learn that you do not have to have your loved one collected from home immediately after death if you would rather spend some time with them. I will arrange a time that suits you to transfer your loved one.

If you have any questions, would like to discuss your funeral wishes or make arrangements for a loved one, I am always available.

“It is not a conversation we ever had”…
“I didn’t want to upset them by asking”…
“We had thought they would get better”…

These are all phases I have heard and are often associated with the feeling of the person not wanting to make the “wrong decision”.

Please use this as a conversation starter with your loved ones to discuss your funeral wishes.

There is no rulebook for saying goodbye.

Most of us are never taught what to do when someone we love dies. It can feel overwhelming, and many people do not realise there are meaningful alternatives to a traditional funeral.

A good Funeral Director will gently guide you through the options- whether that is a direct cremation, a reduced cremation service or a fully personalised celebration of life.

What matters most is choosing something that feels right for you, and honours the person in a way that truly reflects their life.

Death is something we often avoid speaking about, yet it is a natural part of life that connects us all.

Taking the time to talk openly about death and dying can help us better understand our wishes and support those we care about when it matters most.

Conversations around death don’t have to be difficult or uncomfortable. They can be thoughtful, honest, reassuring and mean that your preferences can be honoured.

Dying Matters Awareness Week (4th – 10th May 2026) is an opportunity to start these conversations. Whether it’s with family, friends, or colleagues, opening up the discussion can make a real difference.

Please use this post as a conversation starter- talking is positive.
