Ankle stiffness matters more than most athletes realise.

At Pro Health Physio, we work with athletes from football, basketball, rugby and running backgrounds. One common quality we look for across all of them? Effective ankle stiffness.

Why?

Because the ankle is the first point of contact with the ground. If it collapses or loses rigidity when you hit the floor, you lose valuable energy that should be transferring straight back into propulsion.

Better ankle stiffness helps athletes:
• Transfer force efficiently through the foot
• Improve acceleration and sprint mechanics
• Reduce energy leaks when running or changing direction
• Potentially reduce injury risk through better load tolerance

Here’s a simple drill we often use: Wall March – Ankle Stiffness Focus

The goal is simple:
When you stick the landing, keep the heel elevated and maintain a rigid ankle position rather than letting the heel drop to the floor.

This teaches the body to accept and transmit force through a stiff ankle, which is exactly what happens in running and sprinting.

How to perform it:
• Drive the knee up against the wall
• Strike the ground under your centre of mass
• Stick the position with the heel elevated
• Hold that stiff ankle position before the next step

You don’t need huge volume here.

Start with:
3–5 reps per set

Then progress to rhythm drills:
• 3-step marches
• 5-step marches
• 8-step marches

The aim is to build rhythm, stiffness, and force transfer through the foot.

Small details like this make a big difference to running efficiency and performance.
