A Child’s Voice is about helping adults see beyond behaviour and understand what’s really happening underneath.

This one shares the voice of a child with ADHD – Combined Presentation — where attention can drift, energy can spill over, and effort often goes unseen.

These words reflect what many children wish adults knew:
That forgetting isn’t defiance.
That movement is often regulation.
That impulsivity isn’t a lack of care.
That trying hard doesn’t always look calm or compliant.

When we understand how a child’s brain works, we can respond with support instead of pressure, and connection instead of control.

This visual is designed to be used by parents, educators, and professionals to build empathy, open conversations, and reduce shame — especially for children who are often misunderstood.

Every day, someone tells me that Oliver’s Training has changed the way they care for autistic people and people with learning disabilities.

And every time I hear it, I think of my beautiful son, Oliver.

He should still be here.
His life should have been safeguarded by understanding, compassion, and the right training.

Instead, Oliver became a catalyst for change that is now protecting millions of people across England.

Millions of health and social care staff have completed Tier 1.
Tier 2 is rolling out across the country.
Lives are being saved.

All because one young teenager was denied the safe care he deserved.

Oliver’s story is painful, but what has grown from that pain is extraordinary.

Thank you to every facilitator, every expert by experience, every organisation, every parent, and every frontline worker who has embraced this training with seriousness and heart.

Together, we are changing the system.
Together, we are honouring Oliver.

Why It Matters

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training

Oliver McGowan was a bright, active 18-year-old whose life was tragically cut short after he was given medication in hospital against his and his family’s wishes.

His story exposed serious gaps in how health and care staff understand the needs of autistic people and those with learning disabilities.

His legacy is now driving real change.

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training ensures that staff across health, social care, education and community services gain the knowledge, confidence and understanding needed to provide safer, more personalised support.
