Athlete Spotlight 🌟

When Olly first came to us, he had an old bike, no kit to speak of, and one simple goal: he wanted to race.

That was all we needed to hear.

The first year was all about building — getting miles in the legs, learning the sport, laying a foundation. Year two brought real racing, and with it, the reality that cycling humbles everyone. Dropped. A lot. But here's what we noticed: every time Olly came back, he was stronger than before.

That's not failure. That's the process working exactly as it should.

Year three? Olly is finishing strong, kicking on, and has some big things in the pipeline that we genuinely can't wait to watch unfold.

From an old bike and zero kit to a rider with real racing legs — the academy couldn't be more proud of you, Olly. The best is absolutely still to come. 🙌

Is Your Training Actually Getting You Somewhere?

A lot of dedicated athletes hit a wall — not from lack of effort, but from lack of direction.

If you're logging miles and hours but not seeing the progress you want, it might be time to train with a plan built specifically for you.

At Endurance Academy, we work with runners and cyclists at every level — from first-timers to competitive age groupers — and we build programs around your goals, your schedule, and your life.

No cookie-cutter plans. No guesswork. Just structured, science-backed coaching that moves you forward.

Why Your Easy Days Matter Most

Most athletes underestimate how powerful slow running and riding actually is.

Zone 2 training — that conversational, "am I even working?" pace — is the foundation of endurance performance. Here's why it works:

✅ Builds your aerobic base (the engine behind everything)
✅ Improves fat oxidation — your body learns to use fuel more efficiently
✅ Reduces injury risk by accumulating volume without excessive stress
✅ Allows you to recover while still building fitness

The athletes who show up strongest on race day aren't always the ones who trained hardest — they're the ones who trained smartest.

At Endurance Academy, we build programs around this principle from day one.

💬 Drop a comment: What does your typical easy run or ride pace look like?

🚴‍♂️ Big Weekend for Oli Christie! 🚴‍♂️

Two races, two strong finishes, and a host of power PBs—Oli is proving that consistency and smart racing pay off in his first full year of racing!

📍 Gifford Road Race (Scotland) – Tackled the 51km course with confidence, launching attacks and finishing strong.

📍 Prissick Crit – Kept the momentum going with sharp efforts and tactical racing.

Oli’s progress is a testament to structured training, race-craft development, and the ability to adapt under pressure. His power numbers are climbing, and his racing IQ is sharper than ever—exactly what we aim for in our coaching at Endurance Academy.

Another fantastic result from our fuelling and prep consultations! 🎉

HD absolutely smashed her half marathon with a 1:53.33—an 8-minute PB! 🚀 After a tailored phone consultation focusing on race prep and fuelling strategy, she felt strong, avoided crashes, and even had a sprint finish left in the tank.

This is what happens when science meets strategy! Want to break through your own barriers? Let’s chat about how we can help you fuel and prepare for your best performance yet. 💪✨

Performance isn’t about working harder. It’s about working smarter.

For over two decades, I’ve helped athletes—from professionals to age-group competitors—identify the critical gaps in their training, fuelling, and recovery. The difference between stagnation and progress often comes down to three key adjustments.

That’s why I’m offering the Endurance Audit: a 45-minute, one-on-one review of your current approach. You’ll receive:

- A clear, data-driven analysis of what’s working and what’s not.
- Three actionable steps to break through your plateau.
- £79 credit toward ongoing coaching if you choose to continue.

Most athletes who come to me think they need to train more.

More miles.
More sessions.
More intensity.

But very often, the real problem isn’t training.

It’s energy availability, recovery, and structure.

This week’s case study was a masters athlete in his late 40s.
Training consistently, motivated, doing all the right things on paper — but feeling flat, tired, and frustrated that performance wasn’t improving.

When we looked properly, the issues were clear:

• Not eating enough for the workload
• Poor carbohydrate timing around sessions
• Inconsistent recovery nutrition
• High life stress on top of training
• No real structure to the week

We didn’t add more training.

We fixed the basics first.

Daily intake.
Meal timing.
Session structure.
Recovery.
Sleep.

Within a few weeks:

Energy improved
Sessions felt easier
Weight stabilised
Confidence came back
Race performances improved

This is the reality for a lot of serious amateur and masters athletes.

You don’t need an app.
You don’t need another generic plan.
You need the right adjustments, based on your life, your training, and your physiology.

That’s the work we do at Endurance Academy.

AI is becoming part of endurance sport.

Training apps, recovery scores, wearables, AI-generated plans — athletes now have access to more data than ever.

In many ways, that’s a good thing.

Structure is easier to build.
Sessions are easier to track.
Workload is easier to monitor.

But performance — especially for masters athletes and professionals — is rarely limited by a lack of data.

It’s limited by context.

Work stress.
Sleep.
Fuelling.
Injury history.
Recovery capacity.
Life outside training.

Two athletes can follow the same programme and get completely different results.

Not because the plan was wrong.

Because the situation was different.

Technology is a tool.

Used well, it’s powerful.

But coaching still comes down to judgement, experience and understanding the person behind the data.

I’ll go into this more over the next few posts.

One of the biggest shifts I see with masters athletes is this:

Recovery becomes the limiter.

Not motivation.
Not discipline.
Not willingness to work hard.

Most professionals I work with are highly driven.

They train consistently.
They push intensity.
They want progress.

But after 35–40, life stress often increases at the same time recovery capacity decreases.

Work.
Family.
Sleep.
Travel.

Training has to fit around all of it.

The athletes who keep improving aren’t the ones who train the hardest.

They’re the ones who manage recovery best.

Structure matters more than ever.

A common pattern I see with masters athletes and professionals balancing demanding careers:

They try to solve fatigue with more effort.

More intensity.
More sessions.
More pushing through.

But the real limiter is often recovery capacity.

When work stress, life stress and training stress stack up, the solution is rarely “train harder”.

It’s better structure.

Adjust intensity.
Align fuelling.
Protect recovery.

The goal is always the same:

Sustainable performance.

Many masters athletes I work with are incredibly disciplined.

They rarely miss sessions.
They train consistently.
They push intensity.

But fuelling often doesn’t keep up with the workload.

Years of general health messaging — eat less, avoid carbs, keep things “clean” — can clash with the demands of endurance sport.

The result?

Fatigue accumulates.
Recovery slows.
Performance plateaus.

Endurance performance relies on energy availability and carbohydrate availability.

Not excess — but alignment.

For professionals balancing demanding careers and training, that alignment becomes even more important.

Training structure matters.

Fuelling structure matters just as much.

The Endurance Academy

Hi, thanks for checking out our page ‘The Endurance Academy’ the new rebrand of ‘Bateman Sports Therapy. We're still working away in the background, so expect lots more to come from the site in the future.

So who are we? We are a close knit group of sports scientists and coaches (Jon Bateman & Alan Copland) who work with competitive and recreational athletes of all levels to ensure they surpass their goals. Working across Northern England and Central Italy, we offer a number of services that we feel are integral when supporting you guys.

So what can we offer you? A training program which can include cycling, swimming, running and strength work. A nutritional plan which will assess your current eating habits and help you lose that fat mass while keeping that much wanted lean mass! A top class sports massage service service to keep those aches and pains away, allowing you to stay consistent in your exercise routine. Consistency is key! Finally, our mentoring service. This is ground breaking and something that we all need but maybe don't quite understand. Why do we do what we do? Do I really want this? I've lost my mojo? All sound familiar?

Short and sweet for now, but get in touch for more on what we can do for you.
