When you find out you are pregnant, you can refer yourself for NHS pregnancy care so you start care with a midwife right away.

Once you sign up online, the maternity team will contact you to book your first appointment with a midwife.

You should do this by the 10th week of pregnancy, if possible, but itā€™s never too late to start. If you're over 10 weeks, refer yourself as soon as you can.

Thereā€™s no one thing that causes vascular dementia, but there are lots of different things that increase a personā€™s chances of developing the condition. These are called ā€˜risk factorsā€™.

This graphic shows a few of the most common risk factors for vascular dementia. This type of dementia is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, so some conditions that affect your heart and brain may also increase your risk of developing vascular dementia.

Some of these risk factors, like ageing, canā€™t be changed, but others can be avoided through lifestyle choices.

Things you can do to reduce your risk of developing vascular dementia, and other types of dementia, include keeping active, eating healthily and exercising your mind.
