🙌Supporting the renewal of the Women’s Health Strategy🙌

Yesterday’s announcement from the Department of Health and Social Care - DHSC marks an important step forward in tackling inequalities and improving access to care for women across England.

At the NIHR Innovation Observatory we share this commitment. Our horizon scanning, evidence work and technology briefings continue to inform research, innovation, and policy decisions that can make a tangible difference to women’s health outcomes.

There is an abundance of outputs on our resources page (https://ow.ly/P9LW50Xhvb6) but here are some examples:

⭐NIHR Women’s Health Challenge: Supporting prioritisation through intelligence synthesis: https://ow.ly/gjET50Xhvb5

⭐Menotrophin pre-filled pen for treating female infertility: https://ow.ly/pbKA50Xhvb9

⭐Elinzanetant for treating vasomotor symptoms caused by adjuvant endocrine therapy in women with hormone-receptor positive breast cancer: https://ow.ly/yWhO50Xhvb7

⭐Elinzanetant for the treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes) associated with the menopause:
https://io.nihr.ac.uk/techbriefings/elinzanetant-for-the-treatment-of-moderate-to-severe-vasomotor-symptoms-hot-flashes-associated-with-the-menopause/

From fertility and menopause to cancer care, our analyses aim to shine a light on innovations that can improve diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life for women.

As the Women’s Health Strategy is renewed, we look forward to continuing our collaboration across research, industry, and the NHS, ensuring innovation works for everyone.

This year’s theme, “Mental health in times of crisis and emergencies,” reminds us that innovation must not only push boundaries, it must reach those who need support most.

At the NIHR Innovation Observatory, we are committed to identifying and assessing emerging innovations that could transform how we understand, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions.

Through our and , we’ve explored a wide range of advances in the pipeline, from to and :

🔍 A Horizon Scan of Neurotechnology Innovations👉 https://ow.ly/P6bK50X9EIa

🔍 Neurotechnology for Mental Health, Healthy Ageing, and Physical Disability 👉https://ow.ly/bcsr50X9EIe

💊 Subcutaneous olanzapine for schizophrenia 👉https://ow.ly/Atvl50X9EI9

💊 Iclepertin for cognitive impairment associated with schizophrenia 👉https://ow.ly/y0nf50X9EIg

💊 Dexmedetomidine film for agitation in bipolar disorder 👉https://ow.ly/tOLv50X9EIc

The journey from innovation to implementation is complex, especially in mental health, where lived experience, stigma, and service access intersect. By horizon scanning for early signals of change, we aim to inform research, policy, and investment decisions that bring safe, effective innovations to people faster.

💬 We’d love to hear from you:
Which areas of mental health innovation do you believe hold the greatest potential impact in the next decade?

🗣️MEET OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER: SARAH CUNNINGHAM-BURLEY🗣️

We are very excited to have Professor Sarah Cunningham-Burley, Chair of Nuffield Council on Bioethics lined up for the Futures Foresight and Horizon Scanning Conference 2025 on 19-20 November 2025!

Her keynote: 'Put ethics first to create equitable and inclusive health futures' will explore how research does not operate in a social and ethical vacuum.

Sarah's presentation will use examples from the Nuffield Council of Bioethics work to highlight how embedding ethics into horizon scanning, futures and foresight can support equitable and inclusive health and health care and the role of innovation within it.

It will explore how we should go beyond simply anticipating the ethical implications of emergent scientific trends and seek to utilise ethics to shape such trends in the first place – placing issues such as equity and inclusion at the centre of decisions about where and what to innovate and exploring participatory approaches to doing so.
