Sometimes your body needs breathing space.

This weekend I took some time out with a friend and headed to the tulip fields at Brockbush Farm.

Fresh air, a walk, coffee and a proper catch up. Simple, but exactly what I needed.

It was a good reminder that sometimes we get so used to pushing on that we forget how much our body benefits from a bit of breathing space too.

That’s something I’m seeing a lot of in clinic at the moment.

Not just injuries or ni**les, but people who are stressed, overloaded, not sleeping brilliantly, and trying to keep all the plates spinning.

And very often, that shows up physically.

More tension.
More aches.
Slower recovery.
Progress feeling more up and down than it should.

Sometimes the body isn’t just responding to training load. It’s responding to life load too.

At JST, I’m always looking at the bigger picture, not just the sore area. One client recently messaged to say she’d completed a full hour of weights and Pilates with no bother and no pain for the first time in years.

If things have been feeling a bit full on lately and your body has been feeling the effects, I currently have two appointments available this week:

Thursday 2:45pm
Friday 4:00pm

Still googling your symptoms or asking ChatGPT for answers?

It might give you ideas, but it can’t assess you.

It can’t see how you move, test the area, or work out what’s actually causing the problem to keep coming back.

That’s why proper assessment matters.

At JST, the focus is on getting to the root of the issue, so you’re not left guessing what to do next.

A few spaces are currently available:

Saturday 11 April at 9:15am
Monday 13 April at 12:00pm
Thursday 16 April at 2:00 & 3:00pm

For any of my marathon runners, race day is starting to feel very close now.

Manchester Marathon is on 19th April
London Marathon is on 26th April
Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon is on 10th May

So if something has been niggling in the background, now is the time to get ahead of it.

The calf that won’t fully loosen off
The achilles that is sore the morning after a run
The knee that is fine until the miles build
The hip that has started grumbling on longer efforts

A lot of runners leave these things too long because they worry they’ll be told to stop training completely.

That is not how I work.

The aim is to help you manage things properly, keep you moving well, and give you the best chance of getting to the start line feeling confident.

Availability over the next couple of weeks is limited, so if something feels slightly off, now would be a good time to get it looked at.

Thank you to everyone who has asked about my knee lately. I really do appreciate it.

I’m still waiting on a surgery date, so it’s business as usual in clinic for now.

For those who’ve asked, this isn’t something rehab could have fixed. My kneecap is pretty badly damaged, and a partial knee replacement is now the right next step. In the meantime, I’m keeping on top of strength and mobility to support everything around the knee as best as possible.

It has reminded me how often runners quietly start adapting around a problem before they properly deal with it.

Backing off speedwork.
Avoiding hills.
Cutting runs short.
Losing confidence in a knee that used to feel straightforward.

If that’s you, it may be time to get it looked at before it affects training any more.

Marathon training is going well… until the ni**les start.

This is usually the point in a marathon block where little things begin to creep in.

A calf that won’t loosen off.
A hip that starts grumbling on longer runs.
An achilles that feels fine once you’re moving… then sore again the next morning.
A knee that feels fine for the first few miles, then starts niggling as the run goes on.

Most runners try to ignore it and hope it settles.
But small issues have a habit of turning into bigger ones at exactly the wrong time.

If something feels slightly off, it’s worth dealing with it now — before it starts affecting your training, your confidence, or race day itself.

You do not need to wait until you’re properly injured to get it checked.

I’ve got 3 slots available next week for runners who want to get on top of a ni**le before it becomes a bigger problem.

Things people often try before they come to see me:

• Stretching it
• Foam rolling it
• Resting it
• Avoiding the movement that aggravates it
• Hoping it will settle on its own

Sometimes those things help temporarily.

But if the underlying cause hasn’t been addressed, the problem tends to keep returning.

That’s usually when people decide to finally get it assessed.

Once we assess how the body is actually moving, the next steps usually become much clearer.

I also have two cancellations this week if anyone has been meaning to get something looked at: Wed 4pm and Sat 9:30am.

Feeling better? Good.
But that doesn’t always mean it’s fully sorted.

Pain settling is a step in the right direction, but it doesn’t always mean the issue is fully resolved. If your symptoms are still fluctuating, it’s usually a sign things aren’t fully settled yet.

Sometimes, one well-timed follow-up is all that’s needed to keep progress moving and stop a smaller issue becoming a bigger setback.

We’ve had a 4pm appointment become available this Wednesday due to cancellation. Suitable for a follow-up/review if things are still niggling, fluctuating, or you’ve been meaning to get back in before it worsens.

Something that often surprises people…

Pain isn’t always where the real problem is.

This is a conversation we’ve had several times in clinic this week.

Someone comes in with knee pain…
but the issue is actually coming from the hip.

Or shoulder pain…
but the restriction is further down the chain.

The body is very good at compensating.

Which is why resting or stretching the painful area doesn’t always solve the problem long term.

Once the underlying cause is identified and addressed, progress is often much quicker than people expect.

If something has been lingering for a while, it’s a good idea to have it properly assessed rather than continuing to guess.

Most people plan financially for retirement.

Pensions.
Savings.
Investments.

But very few people plan physically for it.

Yet the body you’ll have in 10–20 years is being shaped by the decisions you make today.

In clinic we regularly hear things like:

• “My knee’s been niggling for months.”
• “My back is stiff every morning.”
• “I’ve just stopped doing the things that aggravate it.”

Often people assume it’s just part of getting older.

But more often it’s the result of small issues that have been building quietly for years.

The good news is that once the root cause is identified, the body responds far quicker than people expect.

If something has been niggling for a while, it’s definitely worth getting it assessed.

Stretching can feel great in the moment — but if the same tight spots keep coming back, it’s usually a sign your body is bracing because something underneath isn’t doing its job properly yet (strength, control, stability).

Weak glutes → “tight” hips
Weak core → “tight” low back
Weak shoulders → “tight” neck

If you’re stuck in the stretch → relief → return cycle, you probably don’t need more stretching… you need a plan that builds strength + better movement patterns.

Sun’s out ☀️ and this week’s been a reminder how quickly little ni**les can build up.

If something’s been quietly brewing and you’re hoping it’ll “settle over the weekend”… it often doesn’t.

A proper assessment + a clear plan can stop a small issue turning into weeks of managing around it.
