Such a great illustration to show that IBS isn’t only about diet….
It can be super easy to focus on the iceberg that is above the water and lose sight of the iceberg below the water.
Did you know that IBS is all about the sensitivity of the nerves in your gut and the gut brain axis?
Think about it like this:
Fructans like those in onion, garlic and wheat are FODMAPs for everyone in the world. Humans do not have the enzyme required to break these FODMAPs down. So in EVERYONE they will travel through the stomach and small intestine to the large intestine. In EVERYONE they will be fermented and create gas, stretching the walls of the intestine and pushing on the nerve endings
🌱 If you do not have a sensitive gut or IBS, the nerves ignore this stretching and think nothing of it. You might be a little extra gassy, but it won’t be painful.
💕 If you do have a sensitive gut, the nerves will collect the information about the stretching and over communicate it to the brain up the gut brain axis. The brain gets concerned about all of this stretching going on in your gut and sends back pain messages to get your attention and get you to do something about it.
The good news is you can train your gut to be less sensitive by paying attention to self-care, CBT and gut directed hypnotherapy.
If you’re looking for someone to tell you to do something today purely because its good for your soul, this is it!
