During summer, when we crave feeling light and fresh, Ayurveda teaches us to cool the body from the inside out.
🌱

How to?
One tip is by avoiding very cold or icy drinks which weaken our agni (digestive fire) and having drinks of usna virya (cooling potency) instead.

This drink is the perfect example and full of such cooling goodness!

Would you try it? It’s so simple!

All you need to do is brewing a mixture of coriander seeds, fennel seeds, rose petals and hibiscus. Let it cool down and sip through the day!

Yoga is a Sanskrit word derived from the root “yuj” which means yoke/union.

There are many definitions of yoga across major texts with all of them bringing beautiful nuances to the subject.

A classical example is the one given by Patanjali in his sutra “Yogah citta vrtti nirodhah {1.2}”.

In Sanskrit:
Yogah: Yoga (is)
Citta: mind-stuff, mind field
Vrtti: modifications
Nirodhah: restraint, inhibition

Therefore, Yoga is the inhibition and sublimation of the modifications of the mind.

But how to? We might wonder!
Not to say it’s an easy task, but Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras give us all the details if we follow the Ashtanga system.

Again, in Sanskrit:
Ashta: eight
Anga: limbs

Which in the Ashtanga Yoga system are:
1. Yama
2. Niyama
3. Asana
4. Pranayama
5. Pratyahara
6. Dharana
7. Dhyana
8. Samadhi

It’s important to be aware of this and not confuse the Ashtanga Yoga or 8-fold method from Patanjali with the physical practice of Ashtanga Yoga; even though yes, the latter is rooted in the foremost.

The Panchamahabhutas

In many cases when I get asked what Ayurveda is, I like taking it a step back and talking about the Panchamahabhutas.

In Sanskrit:
• Pancha: five
• Maha: great
• Bhutas: element (or ghost)

The universe and that includes us (remember that as the macrocosm is the microcosm) is made of the 5 elements.

They represent the etheric, gaseous, radiant, liquid & solid form of all matter and subsequently according to their own nature, they hold different properties.

So then, what comes to mind when you think of each element?

Some possible answers and examples are:

🌌Ether (Akasha)
Space, emptiness, light, omnipresent, universal, formless...

🌬️Air (Vayu)
Dry, light, clear, rough, mobile...

🔥Fire (Teja)
Hot, dry, sharp, penetrating, luminous...

🌊Water (Apo)
Fluid, heavy, soft, viscous, cold, dense, cohesive...

🌍Earth (Prithivi)
Heavy, hard, firm, dense, slow moving, bulky...

Ayurveda is an extremely vast science, but if you grasp the principle of the 5 elements you have got the basics of its foundation and logic.

Understanding their qualities and how they manifest in nature - both at gross and subtle levels - gives you the basic foundation to comprehend the logic behind this ancient wisdom of Ayurveda.

There is something expansive, liberating and freeing associated to the sensation a clean slate brings.

So here I am.
On a mission to create space; physically, mentally.

Probably the soothing of the practices to get back - never better said - in touch with your body and by doing so perhaps transcending to some more subtle realms too.


In Ayurveda, massage or self-massage using warm oils is recommended as part of our dinacharya or daily routines.

And that could be to a place, but I mean back-to-you.

To that space within where there is no expectactions, demands, shame...(you name the bits you want out!) but only peace, compassion and love.
