You may have seen Davina’s update today about her recovery and how her short-term memory is “a bit remiss.” So, how common is memory difficulty following brain surgery?

It’s more common than you might think. In fact, 1 in 2 people we’ve spoken to have experienced memory difficulties or memory loss caused by a brain tumour or its treatment.

Surgery can cause temporary swelling around the brain, leading to short-term memory issues. In some cases, if surgeons remove brain cells responsible for memory, difficulties may be longer-lasting. Treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy can also affect memory, either directly or by impacting energy levels.

If this feels familiar, you’re not alone. Using memory aids, adapting your environment, or trying new planning techniques can help make daily life easier.

Brains Trust were also in attendence at our recent high grade event and hosted a "dealing with uncertainty" workshop that had excellent feedback from patients/families/carers. Feedback received was that patients felt it was beneficial to interact with others who are in a similar situation and there was a good mix of information available. Being able to talk openly and ask questions was also highlighted as a positive of attending the event.

St. Benedict's Hospice

Our recent high grade event at the RVI - The nursing team demonstrated a type of gentle touch hand and arm massage aiding relaxation and mindfulness. Reiki is also available at St Benedict's. Sophie our Neuropsycologist tried out "flower bombing" one of the many activities available in the day centre where you can meet others and make something to take home! Plant it in your garden and await the beautiful flowers 💐

It’s Carers Week!

For Carers Week this year we want to show our support for carersuk in their goal of putting carers on the map.

62% of those who are either currently providing or have previously provided unpaid care reported that they had no choice in taking on a care role because they did not have any other options. That makes an army of 10 million adults in the UK who have no choice but to care.

We all have a role to play in recognising and supporting carers in the community, whether it's by providing support to a member of your local community group or connecting with a family member or friend who is caring for someone.

You can find out more about Carers Week and how to get involved as well as their full No Choice But To Care report here; https://buff.ly/3xiyaJ4
