"The power to change a life... sits in intentional acts of kindness, in choices we make, to be a gateway for someone else."

Last night, we marked the launch of our new Impact Report alongside North East business leaders, change‑makers and supporters of RGS Gives during our annual Philanthropy Dinner.

Our historic Main Hall offered a powerful backdrop to honour 500 years of philanthropic legacy and to spark meaningful dialogue on how we can empower young people and strengthen social mobility across the region.

With over 14,000 RGS Partnership beneficiaries - from communities across the North East - 500 RGS Bursaries that have changed hundreds of lives, the night was a powerful reminder of our role, our reason and our response.

RGS Modern Languages X

🗨️What is your favourite German expression? Let us know in the comments below.👇

This week, our Modern Languages Department proudly celebrated 'Shout Out For German' week, which aims to highlight the strength and vibrancy of studying German.

From curriculum learning to cultural immersion, German at RGS offers students a wealth of opportunities - not only to learn a new language, but to engage with another culture, broaden their world view, and develop confidence alongside vital soft and transferable skills.

Students studying GCSE and A-Level German at RGS benefit from a long-standing partnership and exchange programme with Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Gelsenkirchen.

Plus, opportunities to take part in a range of national and regional competitions, including the European Day of Languages and the North East Festival of Languages.

At RGS, we are proud to champion how learning a language can broaden horizons, change lives, and open up new possibilities!

---

Thank you to all of our Year 12 students who shared their favourite German expressions:

💬Max B 'Klapperkiste' – Rickety old car (literally: “clattering box”)

💬Henry R 'Morgenmuffel' – Morning grouch

💬Nicholas O 'Torschlusspanik' – Fear of running out of time

💬Frau T 'Selbstbeweihräucherung' – Self‑praise

Our Year 13 Politics students had an inspiring day in London, exploring the heart of the UK’s political and judicial systems.⚖️

They began with a tour of the Supreme Court, where they stepped into the judges’ seats and took part in a mock hearing of the R v Jogee case. After a walk down Whitehall, taking in key government landmarks, the afternoon was spent inside the Houses of Parliament.

Students watched live debates in both the Commons and the Lords before joining a workshop to create their own political parties and manifestos - ending in a very close vote!

🗨️ Reflecting on the vote, Oliver W (Y13), said: "The concluding vote to select a winning party was tight with only a single vote separating the victor from the runner-up.

"Yet, this debate also sparked lively discussions about certain contemporary issues and highlighted the diversity of ways in which Parliament can approach them."

Congratulations to our talented U13 football team, who have successfully qualified for the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) Cup semi-finals.🏆

The squad delivered a fantastic performance, securing a 5–2 victory over Cheadle Hulme and progressing as one of just four teams across the UK to reach the next round - a historic achievement for our footballers!

We are enormously proud of our U13 footballers and can not wait for their semi-final home match, where they will face either Aldenham School or Alleyn’s School.
