Slàinte Mhath! 🥃🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Happy Burns Night!
Tonight, January 25th, people across Scotland and around the globe are gathering for a traditional Burns Supper. But why do we hold this feast in the depths of winter?
It’s all to honour the life and legacy of Robert Burns, Scotland's National Bard.
We celebrate Rabbie Burns because his work is woven into the very fabric of Scottish culture. More than just a poet, he was a champion of the common person. His writings on universal themes of love, humanity, friendship, and equality resonate just as powerfully today as they did in the 18th century.
The tradition actually began way back in 1801, shortly after his death, when his closest friends gathered to share a meal and remember his genius. That memorial dinner evolved into the joyous, ritual-filled celebration we know today.
As our infographic shows, it’s a night dedicated to hearty food (bring on the haggis!), good whisky, and great company, all interspersed with his iconic poems and songs—from the dramatic "Address to a Haggis" to the unifying "Auld Lang Syne."
Are you celebrating tonight? Let us know if you’re team Haggis or team Veggie in the comments! 👇
