Hear from Sul about Nook, Newcastle - the Safe Haven for children and young people! 💬

Nook, based at The Beacon on Westgate Road in Newcastle (and coming soon to Regent Terrace, Gateshead), offers free drop-in mental health support for children and young people. Working together with Children North East, we’re here for people aged 13-17 (or 18 if in full time education) across Newcastle and Gateshead.

"Asking for help doesn't make you 'weak' or unable to deal with what your dealing with. It doesn't diminish your resilience or who you are in anyway, and asking for help is actually a better way to help yourself and other people."

A huge thank you to Sul for chatting to us about Nook Safe Haven!

We can’t look at mental health as something separate to everyday life 📢

Things like money, housing, work and relationships can all affect our mental health. When things in our lives feel like they’re going wrong, it can start to have an impact on how we feel and leave us stuck in a cycle that’s hard to break 🔁

When services are closer to home, focused on prevention and offer more accessible ways for everyone to access them, people can take steps towards better mental health sooner 💜

It's Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 📢

Mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum. We say that often at Everyturn, but what does it mean?

It means that we can’t look at mental health as something separate to everyday life. Things like money, housing, work and relationships can all affect our mental health. When things in our lives feel like they’re going wrong, it can start to have an impact on how we feel and leave us stuck in a cycle that’s hard to break.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re being asked to ‘take action’. At Everyturn Mental Health, we see every day how small steps can lead to real change. And not just system or cost saving changes but the real life changes that ensure no one struggles alone.

In our blog, we look at Tom, Harry and Mary's journeys in support. We work with people like Tom, Harry and Mary every day. We see time and time again that when people are listened to, get the immediate support they need and can see a way forward, their mental health improves 💜

Today, we’re so pleased to be celebrating the launch of Nook Newcastle; the first mental health Safe Haven for children and young people in the North East! 🙂

A partnership between Everyturn and Children North East, Nook Newcastle will offer free, walk-in mental health support from Wednesday to Saturday 4 - 8pm, to 13 – 17 year old (and those aged 18 who are in further education) in Newcastle and Gateshead. Online appointments will also be available. Young people can access the service when they need it, without needing a referral from a GP or healthcare professional.

Funded by North East and North Cumbria NHS Integrated Care Board, this pilot will offer welcoming, non-clinical support for young people, giving them an alternative place to access support with anything that is causing them distress.

Mandy Coppin, Head of Children and Young People’s Services at Everyturn, commented:

“Nook represents our commitment to listening to young people and creating support that meets their needs, and offers the right help at the right time, without judgement or barriers. We aim to support the young people who access our services to make sure no one struggles alone.”

Leigh Elliott, Children North East CEO said;

“Children and young people’s voices are at the heart of everything we do at Children North East, and we’re incredibly grateful for the dedication and passion they’ve shown in helping shape the opening of our first Safe Haven for young people’s mental health. Nook Newcastle promises to be a calm, nurturing space for young people, created by young people. Their insight has guided every decision – from the look and feel of the space to the support it offers – ensuring it truly reflects what they need and deserve.

“We are proud to stand alongside them as we open this space, and we remain committed to championing their voices as we continue to build services that put their wellbeing first.”

The service is set to open at a second location at Regent Terrace in Gateshead this summer to extend the offer of mental health support to children and young people in the region.
