💉 Information for patients about the weight loss drug tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) 💉

We have received the following information from the Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board today.

Please read it carefully.

*****************

This information is about how the weight loss drug tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) will be prescribed to patients.

The local NHS is aiming for this drug to be available to those eligible later in the year but is paused whilst we set up local clinics for Derby and Derbyshire.

We are working across the local NHS to put in place community-based clinics to meet areas of greatest need.

This is being organised by the Integrated Care Board (ICB) which has the responsibility.

How can I access tirzepatide (Mounjaro®)

PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT YOUR GP if you think you are eligible as it will not be available in Derby and Derbyshire until later in the year.

The ICB will publish more information on this page once a service has been set up explaining who can access it and how this can happen.

What is tirzepatide (Mounjaro®)

Tirzepatide, also known as Mounjaro®, mimics gut hormones released by the body after eating, telling the brain you are full and slowing down the time it takes the stomach to empty.

Who can get these injections

There are clear rules about which patients can get tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) from primary care.

Eligible groups will be phased, the initial priority criteria are as follows:

You must have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40 plus* and four or more of the following diagnosed health conditions:

✓ type 2 diabetes

✓ high blood pressure

✓ heart disease

✓ obstructive sleep apnoea

✓ abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia)

(* We use a lower BMI threshold – usually reduced by 2.5 kg/m2 – for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean ethnic backgrounds.)

How will the NHS decide who gets tirzepatide (Mounjaro®)

It will not be accessible to everyone who wishes to use it. People with the highest health risks and who meet the clinical criteria will be prioritised.

Access to tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) will be phased in gradually to make sure primary care services are not overwhelmed and can manage the extra demand safely.

The local NHS in Derby and Derbyshire is aiming for it to be available to people who are eligible later in the year.

This is being organised by the Integrated Care Board which has the responsibility.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION for women using weight loss or diabetes medicines such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, or Wegovy

The MHRA has updated its guidance on "skinny jabs". Here's what you need to know:

🚫 These medicines must not be used during pregnancy, when trying to conceive, or while breastfeeding.
💊 If you're taking Mounjaro and are overweight, oral contraceptives may be less effective. You should also use another form of contraception, like the implant, coil, or condoms.
🛑 Never buy these medicines from social media, beauty salons, or any other unregulated sources.
📢 Report any side effects or fake products via the MHRA’s Yellow Card scheme.

Dr Alison Cave, our Chief Safety Officer said:

“Skinny jabs are medicines licensed to treat specific medical conditions and should not be used as aesthetic or cosmetic treatments. They are not a quick fix to lose weight and have not been assessed to be safe when used in this way.”

“Our guidance offers patients a “one stop shop” for our up-to-date advice on how to use these powerful medicines safely.”

📖 Proxy Access to Records 📖

As a surgery, we are bound by strict rules of confidentiality and will never disclose information about an adult patient* to anyone other than the patient themselves unless the patient has expressely consented for us to share their data with a specifically named individual as a proxy.

To have this access granted, the patient will need to complete a “ Proxy Access to Records Form” (available from reception) which enables the patient to grant access to their record at one of two Levels:

1️⃣ Level One Access - shares administrative non-clinical data only (eg the times of appointments, which clinician they are seeing).

2️⃣ Level Two Access - shares all information both clinical and non-clinical with the individual in the same way we would with the patient themselves. This includes test results and the contents of consultations at the surgery. A proxy can also be granted online access to the patient’s digital health record via SystmOnline, the NHS App and other platforms.

We encourage all patients to think whether it might be advantageous for them to grant one of these access types to a loved one or other trusted individual that might be regularly involved in their care.

Without this we cannot and will not share any details about a patient with another individual, no matter how well meaning the enquiry and regardless of their claimed relationship with the patient. This is not to be purposefully obstructive - it is to ensure that sensitive health information is only ever shared with those people a patient has expressly informed us they are happy for it to be shared with.

*Parents or guardians with parental responsibility can access their child's GP records through the GP Practice until they reach 11 years. Once the child turns 13, they can access their own records via the NHS App, and parents' access ends. Of course it is possible for child at this point to still nominate their parent(s) as a proxy after this age using the process outlined above.
