The Pentagram and the Pentacle.
While they look incredibly similar and are often used interchangeably, the difference comes down to one geometric feature—a circle—and how the symbols are historically used.
Here is the breakdown of what sets them apart.
The Pentagram: The Shape
A pentagram is a five-pointed star drawn with five continuous, straight strokes. The word comes from the Greek pentagrammon, meaning "five lines."
The Design: Just the star itself, with no surrounding borders.
The Symbolism: In modern paganism and occult traditions, the five points represent the four classical elements (Earth, Air, Fire, and Water) plus the fifth element, Spirit (usually the top point).
Context: It is a geometric symbol and a concept rather than a physical object. When inverted (two points up, one point down), it is often associated with Baphomet or Satanism, representing the triumph of matter over spirit.
The Pentacle: The Object (and the Circle)
In modern usage, a pentacle is a pentagram enclosed within a circle. However, historically, the word had a broader definition.
The Design: A five-pointed star bound by an outer circle. The circle represents unity, wholeness, protection, and the infinite cycle of life and nature.
The Historical Nuance: Historically (such as in old Renaissance grimoires), a "pentacle" didn't even have to be five-pointed. Derived from the Latin pentaculum, it referred to any magical amulet or talisman inscribed with a protective symbol—whether it was a hexagram, a square, or complex sigils.
Modern Context: In Wicca and modern witchcraft, a pentacle specifically refers to the circled star, and it is often a physical object—a disc made of wood, silver, brass, or clay placed on an altar to ground energy.
