Unfortunately, shutting-up and listening is incredibly difficult when someone is in distress and feels totally counter-intuitive. When a young person comes to us crying, self-injuring, shouting, despondent, or despairing our natural instinct is to try and make the pain stop by doing something. We give advice, try to 'fix' the problem, or try to convince them that they should/do feel differently than they do. When our 'doing' doesn't work we can feel frustrated, resentful, or hopeless with the young person and their 'unfixable' problem.

When young people (any people!) share their distress and difficulties with us what they most often want is to be seen, heard, and understood. They usually need us to shut up, listen empathically, and try to understand how their world feels right now. To feel really 'seen' by a safe other is a hugely regulating and reparative experience - suddenly the world and our problems feel more manageable.

Aging is the primary risk factor for the development of cognitive dysfunction, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia. Numerous, established biological “hallmarks of brain aging” contribute to age-related reductions in cognitive function and increased neurodegeneration/dementia risk with aging.
Exercise is perhaps the best strategy for inhibiting all major hallmarks of brain aging, largely because it activates key cellular energy-sensing pathways. This enhanced energy metabolism/regulation with exercise is important because the proteins and cellular pathways involved can also directly influence other hallmarks.

Health services in all sectors can continue to operate subject to observing safety advice (www.gov.uk)

Based on this guidance we will remain open during this lockdown to support our patients including face to face where appropriate. We continue to encourage the at risk population and non urgent cases to not attend face to face and use our virtual services where possible. For face to face consults we will continue to wear recommended ppe and have reduced patient numbers to ensure time for cleaning between patients. Stay safe, Ed

“ The chartered society of physiotherapy is keen to reassure members and patients that physiotherapy services across the UK can remain open no matter what level of lockdown restrictions their area is subject to. This includes private and independent sectors”

Based on the current guidance from public health England and our governing body Grosvenor Physiotherapy Clinic will remain open during the second national lockdown.

We have had increasing numbers of patients coming through the clinic since the first lockdown who have been unable to access NHS services or had delays on elective procedures for painful conditions. Sadly we have also seen an increase in people attending with more serious conditions, perhaps through difficulties accessing GP services. As such we feel it is important to remain open as long as we are allowed to be, to support the local community and the NHS.

We have in place several measures to help reduce the risk of virus transmission. We triage and screen our patients remotely before agreeing to face to face consults. We have reduced our available appointments by 50%, allowing time for cleaning of surfaces and airing of the room between patients and our physios wear the recommended PPE for each face to face contact. For those clients who are unable to attend face to face we can offer remote consultations over the phone or video call with online exercise resources and self treatment advice.

We are here to help, good luck to all.

Sincerely

Ed Stephens
Director, Grosvenor Physiotherapy Clinic.
