Cervical screening saves lives by detecting changes early, often before any symptoms appear.

👉 Who is eligible?
If you are aged 25–64 and registered with a GP in Wales, you will be invited for cervical screening by Cervical Screening Wales.

🌟 New Chickenpox Vaccine Now Available for Children 🌟

Becoming a new parent can feel overwhelming, and there’s a lot to keep track of - especially your child’s immunisations.

From January 2026, the chickenpox vaccine has been added to the routine childhood vaccination programme. It is now given as part of a combined MMRV vaccine at 12 and 18 months, protecting children against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox.

A catch-up programme will also be introduced later in 2026 for children aged between 3 years and 4 months and under 6 years old, who have not already had chickenpox or two doses of the varicella vaccine.

Message for Parents re: school absence

We want to reassure parents and carers that you do not need to book a GP appointment if your child has a minor illness that you feel can be safely managed at home.

If you believe your child is too unwell to attend school, that decision should stand. Many common childhood illnesses can be treated at home with rest, fluids, home testing where appropriate, over-the-counter medicines, or advice from a local pharmacist.

GP appointments should be used when a child genuinely needs medical assessment. We are aware that you are being asked for evidence from your GP to support their absence or it will be recorded as unauthorised. Self-certification by parents is sufficient in cases of illness.

Please note that we do not provide sick notes or letters to authorise school absence for children, as this is not NHS work and is not required. Decisions about school attendance are a parental or carer responsibility, not a medical one. schools should not place parents under pressure to seek medical appointments solely for the purpose of evidencing absence. Doing so places unnecessary strain on NHS services and is contrary to national guidance.

If you have concerns about attendance policies or how absences are recorded, we encourage you to discuss these directly with your child’s school or the relevant governing bodies.

Thank you for helping us protect GP appointments for children who truly need medical care. This information has been cascaded to local schools.

Flu Is on the Rise – Protect Yourself and Your Family 💉

Flu cases are increasing across Wales, and some people, including children, are becoming very unwell and needing hospital care.

The flu vaccine is a safe and effective way to protect yourself, your family, and your community. Vaccination helps reduce the spread of flu, especially in schools and busy community settings.

✅ Children up to Year 11 are eligible for the free nasal spray flu vaccine
✅ Eligible adults can also receive the flu vaccine
