Lets talk Cotton Buds!
They are great for cleaning up mistakes you made with your eyeliner, but, here are a few reasons why we at RG Hearing, do not recommend them to clean the inside of your ears.
1. Earwax is not a sign of being dirty. Some parents have used cotton buds on their kids ears to keep them clean, but the pictures will show you what can happen.
2. In your ear canal you have a bend, this is there to protect your delicate tympanic membrane (eardrum) by using a cotton bud you risk pushing the earwax further down the ear, making it near impossible to dislodge by its self. Causing compacted wax. Which is uncomfortable, causing hearing loss and in some cases tinnitus.
3. Have I mentioned puncturing your eardrum? if you do puncture your eardrum, you will experience severe pain, and your ear may leak a clear fluid, or even blood. A punctured eardrum can heal however, it could take longer than you’d expect and it can also lead to conductive hearing loss and a risk of infection.
So that's it! Those are our thoughts and advice on using cotton buds to clean your ears. But, if you do use them keep in mind the possible risks of using cotton buds in your ears.
