Are these things normal? 👀
1. "My joints pop!"
Often felt in the knees, hips or shoulders, this is totally normal and not a sign that anything is wrong! However, you should be concerned if popping is associated with PAIN or INSTABILITY ⚠️
2. "I have less range of motion in my right shoulder"/ "my left arm is weaker than my right" / "one shoulder is higher"
Your dominant arm is stronger and has more muscle tone than your non-dominant side, contributing to asymmetry + decreased range of movement.
3. "I have a neck hump!"
At the bottom of your neck, your cervical spine becomes the thoracic spine. The posterior processes (bony bits) of C7 and T1 are significantly longer than the rest, and along with the change in curvature this gives the characteristic "neck hump". This is mostly down to your anatomy, though certain things can make it more apparent:
- Poor posture (upper crossed syndrome, sometimes called "tech neck")
- Weight gain/ weight distribution
- Cushings disease (uncommon, but associated with neck hump!)
- Osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) which contributes to an increased curvature of the upper spine (kyphosis)
- Other spinal diseases that cause a progressive kyphosis, such as ankylosing spondylitis or scheuermanns
