Mind in Gwent

Mind in Gwent We want to create a mentally healthy society. Mind in Gwent is member of the Local Mind Associations in England and Wales.

Through our information, services and campaigns, we tackle stigma, barriers and isolation so that everyone can access mental health support when they need it. Mind in Gwent is a mental health organisation formed by the merger of Newport Mind Association, Mind Monmouthshire and Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent Mind. With offices in Newport, Abergavenny, Pontypool, and Brynmawr, we use our shared experienc

e and knowledge to help people in our diverse communities with their mental health struggles. We provide a wide range of support and services working with diverse communities across Gwent to help reach those in our communities in need of support. Our services include Wellbeing and Counselling services for adults, Children and Young People’s services (including group and one on one support in and outside of schools), Housing, Tenancy and Supported Living services, warm hubs and rural working/farmers’ support. We love inviting special guests to our wellbeing groups, and M. Purkiss was no exception.

Matt shared his journey from struggling with his mental health to discovering a creative outlet through writing and publishing his own novels. His story shows how purposeful, mindful activities can have a transformative impact on wellbeing.

A huge thank you to Matt for visiting our men’s group in Newport and speaking so openly with our members.

If you’d like to share a positive coping strategy with one of our wellbeing groups in Newport, Abergavenny, Pontypool or Brynmawr, get in touch – we’d love to hear from you.

Mind in Gwent is looking for new Trustees to help shape the future of mental health support across our communities.

Right now, more people than ever need accessible mental health and wellbeing support. Strong leadership behind the scenes is vital to making that happen.

We’re looking for passionate, collaborative people who care about making a difference. You don’t need previous trustee experience – what matters most is strategic thinking, shared values and a commitment to improving mental health across Gwent.

We would especially welcome interest from people with strategic experience or knowledge in:

🔹 Communications, marketing and social media
🔹 Legal, compliance and governance
🔹 Technology and AI
🔹 Fundraising
🔹 HR and people management
🔹 Data management
🔹 Lived experience of mental health challenges

As a Trustee, you’ll help guide the direction of Mind in Gwent, scrutinise important decisions, and play a key role in helping local people access the support they need.

This is an opportunity to use your skills for real social impact, while developing your own experience, networks and leadership skills along the way.

For an informal conversation before you apply, email Mind in Gwent CEO Dave Bland at director@mindingwent.org.uk.

Applications close on 22 June at 10am. Begin your application by visiting our Become a Trustee webpage – link in bio.

Meet our new hero, Dorothy Wood 🙌

For her 90th birthday, all Dorothy wants is to help people in her local community access life-changing mental health support. So instead of gifts, she’s asking for donations to Mind in Gwent.

You can help Dorothy spread kindness, hope and happiness to those who need it most. To donate, visit Dorothy’s fundraising page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/dorothy-90-birthday?utm_medium=FA&utm_source=CL

Happy 90th birthday, Dorothy! 💙

Taking part in a race isn’t just about running further or faster. It can also be a fantastic way to look after your mental health.

When Newport Marathon Festival runners were asked whether staying active helps their mental health, more than 95% said it does – proof that the benefits of training go far beyond the finish line.

There are still plenty of running events to train for in 2026, including Cardiff Half Marathon this October.

Missed out in the ballot? Why not run it for Mind in Gwent? We’ve secured a limited number of charity places for runners who can commit to meeting our fundraising targets.

To find out more, check out our Cardiff Half Marathon registration page – link in bio 🏅

This week, we’ve been sharing ways to look after your mental health through creative activities. And here in Gwent, there are loads of great places to explore your creativity while connecting with others in safe, supportive environments.

Here are five of our favourites:

🎸 Le Pub, Newport: One of Newport’s best-loved grassroots music venues, known for supporting emerging artists and creating an inclusive space for live performance. Whether you’re into music, poetry or alternative culture, it’s a welcoming hub for creativity and connection.

🖼️ Llantarnam Grange, Cwmbran: A unique arts centre and gallery showcasing contemporary craft and design from Welsh and UK-based makers. With exhibitions, workshops and community events, it’s an inspiring space to get creative and meet like-minded people.

🎧 Kenny’s Vinyl Vault, Abertillery: More than just a record shop, this community-focused space is packed with music, conversation and nostalgia. It’s a great spot for discovering new sounds, supporting independent culture and connecting with fellow music lovers.

🎭 The Riverfront, Newport: A vibrant arts venue offering theatre, live music, comedy, film and creative workshops for all ages. It’s a brilliant place to discover local talent, try something new and feel part of the area’s creative community.

🎨 The Art Shop and Chapel, Abergavenny: An independent gallery and creative space that celebrates art and culture in the heart of Abergavenny. Its exhibitions and events help bring people together while supporting local artists and creative expression.

Where are your favourite places to get creative and connect with your passions in Gwent? Tag your favourite spots in the comments – we’d love to share more local gems in a future post!

Did you know we offer art therapy at Mind in Gwent?

You don’t need to be “good at art” to benefit from it – art therapy is simply about using creativity as a way to express yourself in a safe, welcoming space.

🖌️ Art materials are always available, and you can choose whether or not to use them.
💬 Talk as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.
🧠 Particularly helpful for people experiencing anxiety, depression or the effects of trauma.
🌈 Suitable for adults and children, including people who are neurodiverse, have learning difficulties, or are living with dementia. Art therapy can offer forms of non-verbal communication that traditional talking therapies may not.

Sessions are led by an HCPC Registered Art Therapist with immediate availability.

📍 Mind in Gwent Newport Office
💷 £50 per session

Last week, local author M. Purkiss visited our Men’s Group in Newport to lead a discussion on how creative writing can support mental wellbeing.

From scribbling down thoughts to writing entire novels, Matt explored how creative activities like writing can help with processing complex emotions, managing negative thinking patterns and building healthier coping habits.

We’ll be sharing some of Matt’s best advice in an upcoming post, so stay tuned!

If you live in Gwent and would like to attend one of our wellbeing groups – either as a regular member or to lead a session – get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.
