Platypus Healing Therapies is run by Reiki Practitioner and practising Pagan, Sara, who, as a mother to two small children is keen to guide other women through this sacred period of matrescence. Specialising in Reiki treatments for pregnant women and new mothers, as well as offering joint Reiki sessions for both Mum and baby, Sara offers a relaxing, welcoming environment for women in this most sacred phase of womanhood.

Can you feel it? Those first stirrings of the Earth? That feeling that darkness is slowly melting away and light is peeking through the cracks of our winter fog?

Today marks Imbolc. The halfway point between the Winter Solstice at Yule and the Spring Equinox at Ostara.

It’s a murmer in the trees, a whisper on the wind, a hum of birdsong, all saying “Just hold on. Better days are coming. Not long now”.

Just hold on.

Happy New……meh….🎉😒

If you’re not feeling into the “New Year, New Me” bumpf that goes around on 1st January, that’s perfectly ok and is actually pretty normal!

Here in the United Kingdom, we only adopted the Gregorian calendar as recently as 1752, a mere 274 years ago - my Nanna had tins in her cupboard older than that, I’m sure!

Prior to that, New Year’s Day was actually on March 25th, which made a lot more sense as this was around the time of the Spring Equinox, a time of fresh starts, new beginnings, the world coming back to life after the darkness of winter. This time of year lends itself much better to making resolutions, breaking old habits, starting afresh, and making plans. This is likely what our ancestors would have done at this time for thousands of years prior to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar.

Moving New Year’s Day to 1st January, on the other hand, plonks the beginning of the year right in the middle of winter, a time when food, light, and energy is scarce. Our bodies and minds are deep in survival mode - it’s no wonder we don’t feel fired up with a new lease of life and sudden motivation - it’s because we’re not supposed to!

So, if New Year’s Day has rolled around with more of a whimper than a bang for you, that’s ok. Settle back on the sofa, go within, hunker down where it is warm and let the rest of the winter pass at its own pace. That’s the natural order of things. Spring will arrive in her own good time and grace us with the drive and motivation to get up and go once more.

For now, just rest.

There’s a time to be productive and that time is not now.

Just rest.
