The Shruti /Sruti /श्रुति box is a beautiful little reeded bellows instrument derived from the harmonium. It holds an enchanting fundamental tone that breathes as a drone while playing. The keys on the front allow us to set the interval of the chord that's played. Due to it's soft and filling sound, it's especially useful for chanting with (it's also used to help train the voice) and provides a rich sonic landscape for the flute or other instruments to dance within.
I often use it at the end of a soundbath to guide people back gently to their bodies with a soft bit of vocal toning or kirtan (sung mantra). We occasionally borrow it's song at the start of a session to hum or sing together and enjoy the sensation of internally generated vibrations, and the vibrations of the surrounding community that sing with us, the two often merging in a field of joyous, calming, and accepting energy.
It's interesting (and perhaps mere coincidence) that the word 'Sruti' also refers to a large body of sacred Vedic literature and in Sanskrit means "that which is heard". It also may be worth noting that Srutis (in reference to the bodies of text) have been variously described as a revelation through "direct experience", or of primordial origins realized by ancient Rishis.
It's a walm and welcoming little box of joy and we always look forward to hearing it's song... 'Tis a divine wee thing!
