Audit and review of the management arrangements in your business are a vital part of running your business – whether it’s financial, HR, procurement or operations (any part of the business in fact) – knowing where you stand, how you’re doing, is useful.

Getting a measure on how well you’re doing is essential to managing health and safety – takes you from being reactive to be proactive in your compliance activities.

Health and safety auditing is a crucial process for evaluating an organization's health and safety performance, ensuring compliance with both legal requirements and internal objectives. It is a standard component of all recognized Health and Safety Management Systems.

Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers are required to monitor and review the effectiveness of their preventive and protective measures aimed at controlling health and safety risks. Auditing often plays a key role in this monitoring process.

Health and Safety Audits can be offered as a project piece (one-time service) or as part of our Retained Client Health and Safety Service.

The scope of each audit is customized to be proportionate to the size and risk profile of your operation. Through our audits, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of your health and safety compliance status, as well as an identification of key risks. The audit will either confirm that you have addressed all major compliance and risk factors or highlight any gaps that need attention.

We provide an action plan with recommendations for corrective measures to address non-compliance, helping you create a road map for continuous improvement.

Audits also serve as evidence of compliance with relevant legislation, as audits and reviews are legally required for managing health and safety.

Even in cases where no non-conformance is found, we may identify areas for improvement and share these insights with you, supporting your ongoing efforts toward enhancing management processes.

We recently prosecuted a company for repeatedly failing to protect workers from exposure to wood dust.

Pendle Woodcraft (Blackburn) Limited failed to implement safe working practices despite earlier interventions.

The company consistently failed to control the accumulation of wood dust at its site in Darwen, Lancashire.

Wood dust can cause serious and often irreversible health problems, including dermatitis and when breathed in excessively it can cause asthma and in the case of hardwood dust nasal cancer.

Wood dust is also known to be flammable and, in certain situations, can cause a fire or explosion.

You can read more about this case here: https://press.hse.gov.uk/2025/01/15/company-fined-after-repeatedly-exposing-workers-to-risks-from-wood-dust/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=prosecution_push

By law, if your business employs five or more people, you are required to have a written health and safety policy AND record your risk assessments in writing.

This isn’t optional - it’s a legal requirement. Even if you have fewer than five employees, having a policy is still considered good practice, especially if you are dealing with the public, where there is risk to others, or you are working on other people’s premises.

Your health and safety policy should include three main components:

• A brief policy statement that outlines your organisation’s commitment to health and safety and your approach to it.
• An organisational structure that shows who is responsible for what when it comes to health and safety.
• Clear arrangements for identifying and managing risks that protect the health and safety of your workforce and others.

The policy statement is the core of the policy that every organisation must have.

The organisational structure is equally important and typically takes the form of an organigram, as well as descriptions of each employee’s health and safety responsibilities. Every employee plays a role, and this should be clearly stated.

Make sure the organisation chart and job descriptions are in a format that can be shared with all employees, ensuring everyone understands their duties and responsibilities.

Identifying and managing risks can be more complex, as many organisations need detailed manuals or management systems to fully cover this aspect. To keep your policy concise, it’s best to summarize the key points and refer to relevant manuals or risk assessments for more detailed information.

If you would like help with putting any of the above in place, or you would like to review or improve on your existing system, get in touch.

Did you know experiencing a slip or trip at work is one of the most common workplace accidents despite being easily preventable?

Employers should carry out risk assessments, install handrails or anti-slip mats and train employees to deal with spillages.

If you have slipped or tripped at work and would like to know if you’re entitled to compensation, please head to our website for more information: https://coodes.co.uk/services/slip-at-work-claim-compensation/
