When I first discovered calisthenics parks in Burleigh Heads years ago, I was hooked…

I’d wake up, run to the bars, train with locals, grab a coffee, and then go for a surf.

In Ericeira, I got to experience that again… Calisthenics is a special way of life for me. It connects me to nature, helps me get jacked, and lets me learn awesome skills that benefit my surfing.

People ask me how it helps with surfing. I can paddle hard, pop up fast, and my core is strong. That all adds up to explosive power and endurance, and it massively boosts confidence too.

I started surfing and calisthenics around the same time, between 18 and 22 years old. Training both together has been my bread and butter ever since.

A well needed trip away to soak up some sun, surf, calisthenics and good times 🏄🏼‍♂️

Blessed to have surfed Ribeira D’Ilhas several days in a row, trained, ate beautiful home-cooked meals, hung out with the missus and “rested”. I say “rested” I just did everything I love and 10x’d it 🤸🏼‍♂️🏄🏼‍♂️🧜🏻‍♂️☕️

Looking forward to heading back soon - I love places like this because they just emanate good health, froth and stoke 🤙🏻

Some moves that 1000% 10x performance 

All of this makes smashing goals in athletic hobbies far more efficient.

The reason for this is because they all require solid strength and mobility fundamentals.

“I’ll never be able to do that”
Bro2bro - you’ve never even tried - the strength is built in the journey 🤙🏻💪🏼

Strict Ring Muscle Up

Yes - you can learn it without bands! 🦧

Numero Uno: you’ll need a solid comprehension of False Grip - that cannot be stressed enough. No FG = No (strict) MU 🙅🏼

Conditioning wise, you’ll neeed a: solidly strong dip, high pull ups and solid L-sits which can be built at the same time as working these progressions - don’t not start because you can’t do these. Train them in parallel 🦧

As you get stronger you can start working the vertical movement pattern and the best way to do this is working eccentrically (through the lengthening phase of the pattern) 🤸🏼

If you just keep drilling it using legs assisted methods and working on the above - you can unlock it 🔓

The time I WOULD advocate for using bands is to support yourself at the peak of the “pulling phase” but not to use the band to explode through the move! 💣

You’re gonna need to build true strength where the band does most of the work and takes the load - that’s the most important part to learn, rather than just “jumping” through it 🦘

The struggle is real, but it’s in the struggle that we overcome the obstacles by building resilience and strength through range & pattern 🧘🏼

You’re right…. The World’s cooked. We can still choose how we want to live though! 🧜🏼‍♂️

Can you learn The RMU without bands?

Yes. Just get strong af. (you’re gonna need it) 💪🏼

Work the transition like so, utilising:
1. Pistol
2. Vipers
3. Deep AF Dips
4. Controlled Negative

Bands are great but not to be relied on solely - use both ☯️

Result = build raw strength + learn technique + learn strength through technique ranges 📈

All of these moves place the focus on Depth, “The Pit” and Transition 🦧

Legs are great assistance because you can gauge how much assistance to give ⚖️

Calisthenics for me is about being conditioned to perform across everything I do that uses my body - not just Cali.

With Calisthenics I have the freedom to train where I want, when I want and how I want = NatureMaxxing (ain’t it weird we now have to “Maxx”?)

I highly recommend people get Conditioned with exercises such as these, as they work the body in ways it’s going to need to be able to handle, when performing the big skills!

Tan also be performed in a tree AND they’re fun - on holiday? No problem! 🌴

Archers: dynamic movement that offers unilateral strength building possibilities leading to 1 Arm Pull Ups and extra challenge.

Dips + L Sits: dynamic and work skills such as ring support hold, balance, core and is a hugely compound exercise!

I reckon most people don’t start because there’s almost tooooo much information…

Here to tell you that Push, Pull & Legs in one session is how I’ve trained for the vast majority of my life - mostly bodyweight - and it’s gotten me this far!

If the reason you don’t start is because you don’t like gyms - I hear ya… but you could still be doing something.

Sure - I train weights too - I love it, especially during winter, yet the reigning majority of my practice is Bodyweight based and I’d always rather be outside doing it.

I’ve gotten to this point by continual Progressive Overload, Rest, Eating FOOD (not products) and participating in Athletic / Sporty pass-times (Surfing, BJJ, Running…)

Simply - do more things Humans are designed to do 🦧

Wintering Begins…

We’re locking in here at SΛLΛ 🥷🏼

What Winter for me is looking like has begun to land… there’ll be lots of nourishing meals, slow cooks, walks and nature time - amongst all the athletic activity 🧜🏼‍♂️

Calisthenics Classes are absolutely pumping at Shiva, with a range of classes to suit all abilities! They’ve even had to add another class 😱

I’ll be coaching bespoke 1:1’s there for winter… so if you’re thinking about getting started and/or wanting to take your Calisthenics/Movement to a new level; that’s where I’ll be 🧘🏼

Working with Base over Summer has undoubtedly impacted me the most, realising even more deeply just how much Movement capacity directly impacts Surfing! Have learnt so much coaching for these guys 🤝

As always: I’m frothing on being a White Belt in a different discipline - that’s what I’ll be dialling in on over Winter, as well as more wave time too…

Receiving messages everyday from current and past-clients, expressing their joy in their achievements, lights me up! 💡

Get fit for Cornwall y’all 🤙🏻 (and ride switch sometimes - it’s good for the Soul)

Enjoying exploration of Multi-Planar Movement for sports and lifestyle that keeps me Frothin 🤙🏻

Everything I enjoy for Hobbies requires that I be able to Move in a multitude of ways…

These are some I’ve leant on massively through summer. I used these to stay strong for coaching, surfing, living and greasing the groove 💃🏼

Can get a lot done with some Rings and a Pink Fluffy KettleBell by 🐶
