Yoga isn’t about flexibility or reaching certain postures. It is about listening to your body.

All too often I’d feel the need to be constantly moving my body or being busy. Yoga has allowed me the space to just be me.

By tuning into the anahata chakra, we are reminded to show compassion to ourselves and to those around us.

A moment of calm amongst turbulent waves 〰️

Mudras are gestures that we make with our hands, or the whole body, to subtly channel prana in a certain direction and help gain states of concentration.

This particular mudra, known as Chin Mudra or Ghyani Mudra represents the union of the individual self with the universal self. It helps focuses the mind and is said to bestow wisdom and insight into our true identity. It is said to redirect the prana being emitted by the hands back into the body.

I use this mudra during meditation, to help quieten my mind and tune into my physical, mental and energetic body. It helps me to pause, feel grounded and be truly present.

Pranayama: the art of expanding life's vital force.

Nadi Shodhana, or alternate nostril breathing is my go-to pranayama. This exercise involves controlling the flow of our breath through one nostril at a time. It cleanses and purifies the energy channels in our body, bringing balance and clarity, especially in stressful times.

Pranayama shares common ground with some of the therapeutic breathing techniques we use in mental health support. Our breath holds immense power over us. No one-size-fits-all, it’s just a matter of finding what resonates with you.

In Hatha Yoga, the word Hatha refers to relationships of opposites. ‘Ha’ represents the sun and ‘tha’ represents the moon.

Compared to Vinyasa Yoga, the pacing is slower in Hatha, with more static posture holds (asanas). There is a focus on cleansing (shodhana) and pranayama breathing techniques to allow the balancing of our energies.

I find that during Hatha Yoga, I have the space to pause, notice and become more attuned with my body during the asanas.

If you’re new to yoga, all the terminology can be overwhelming, but Hatha classes can be a great place to start.

Surfing and Yoga often go hand in hand for a number of reasons. The water element is associated with the Sacral Chakra, which is housed in the pelvis and hip region. Water is the element of emotion, creativity, passion and pleasure. Like the rolling tides of the ocean, the water element is strong, yet soft and fluid.

For me, surfing and yoga both allow me to enter a state of flow and remain present. Both require stamina, strength and flexibility. Both allow me to feel connected to the world around me. Both provide a sense of community. Both energise me and provide me with endless joy 🫶

As well as teaching yoga, I work full time in mental health. I’m soon beginning my training to become a Clinical Associate Psychologist in Cornwall, UK.

In my work, I’ve seen first-hand the link between mindfulness and enhanced wellbeing.

Yoga has taught me to connect and control my breath, helping me remain present when times get tough. My goal is to share this gift for others to enjoy.

Hello and welcome to Zephyr Yoga!

I'm Grace, a yoga teacher based in Newquay, Cornwall.

The word "Zephyr" refers to a soft, gentle breeze. As an ocean enthusiast and avid surfer, I infuse my yoga teaching with rhythmic breath and movement, fostering tranquility amidst life's turbulent waves.
