I was talking with some students about the subtle elements of practice recently.
The things that we experience but are not commonly taught as part of a yoga class.

One of these subtle parts of practice is what I call, β€œbeing comfortable in discomfort.”

When we first start stretching and contorting our bodies, they naturally resist. Often the very areas we are trying to relax will tense up in order to defend us from the bodies perceived threat of injury.

The same happens in free diving. The body has been breathing for us our whole lives. For many of us without any conscious thoughts required. So when we start to take control over the breath. The body can be hesitant to trust and let us take control.

However in both cases with a little time and practice the body begins to trust that we understand what is safe and opens into new depths of freedom. We can find a sense of comfort in the uncomfortable and eventually find a place that is truly peaceful even in the face of fear.

If you would like some guidance and dive deeper into your practice.

Check out for a multitude of classes.

I should add discomfort is not the same as pain….

Stretch of the muscles πŸ‘πŸΌβœ…
Pain in/around jointsπŸ‘ŽπŸ»βŒ
Free Diving.
Contractions πŸ‘πŸΌβœ…

One thing I love about ashtanga yoga is the invitation to be introspective.
Because it is a personal practice, it invites us to ask questions.
How does this feel?
What sensation does this practice give me?
Is that what I want or could I approach things differently?
All good questions that we can ask in other parts of our lives. But in the practice of yoga, we give ourselves space to pay attention. Through breath and movement we come to know ourselves in a way we may have never seen before.
If you want to explore ashtanga self practice, you can join Jock 7-9am every Thursday.
Or if you have practiced ashtanga but want to dive deeper you can join me 6-7.30pm every Thursday.

What amazing gardens here at Carreg Dhu. I have donated a little to the gardener fund as a thank for this amazing space. I sometimes enjoy a little walk around while you're all in Savasana.

Thank you to all of you have come along, it's been lovely to meet so many of you and to start a few people along the path of yoga.

I have a busy last 2 weeks of work, but I will try to do 1 more day of yoga before I leave.

If you are desperate for some ashtanga, then drop me a message and I will see if we can squeeze in a private session.

But don't forget Bryony is offering a few classes a week now and is also offering private bookings.

Keep moving and keep practicing πŸ˜πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈπŸš΅β€β™€οΈπŸ€Έβ€β™‚οΈπŸ™

Some days I really struggle with balance. It feels like this body is a completely disconnected from what I want it to do.

But by continuing through the days where I struggle it is possible to enjoy the days of where everything aligns perfectly.

The struggle is directly interdependant with the days of ease.

Good, bad, hard, easy it's all balance.

Today is world environement day.

My natural environment is water, my home is the sea.

If you look around you will realise everything is breathing and moving in one form or another.

The in and out of the tide, the come and go of the wave. The breath and movement of a planet.

Take some time to enjoy your environment and see the life.
