Menopause: The Last Great Opportunity

Our bodies are born with an innate intelligence that governs our ability to self heal. The self-healing process is fueled by Qi. If your Qi is strong and balanced and you take good care of yourself, your own energy system will be able to regulate itself. By middle age, however, our bodies show the effects of years of stress and unhealthy lifestyle habits, and our Qi has declined and gotten out of balance.

👉Perimenopause
If you are in perimenopause, your body’s Qi and the function of your organs are just starting to decline. At this early stage, it may be easy to tune up your system. Acupuncture or herbs, alone or in combination, might bring quick relief from symptoms. If they do, don’t stop treatment too soon. Even if symptoms seem to have disappeared, the function of your organs will still need support. It’s a good idea to continue treatment for a while so you can be sure you’ve addressed the source of the problem. If you’re taking herbs, for example, keep taking them even if you feel fine. These herbs are designed to help your organs function better so you can heal yourself. Then you can gradually switch from herbal therapy to self-healing with foods, Qigong, and meditation.

👉Menopause
If you’re fully into menopause and experiencing its many discomforts, you can now understand where they come from and why. I strongly recommend the healing program that includes both classical Chinese herbs and acupuncture, and some form of energy practice, such as Qigong or Taiji. This will help unite your body, mind, and spirit.

If you’re fairly healthy, and the quality of your treatment is good, you should see an immediate improvement in hot flashes, night sweats, and palpitations. If you don’t, talk to your TCM practitioner to see if your treatment needs to be adjusted. Discuss whether your symptoms come and go during treatment, or if they get worse. Even if you do get quick relief from your symptoms, healing their root cause takes at least three to five months. The timing depends upon your general health and the skill of your doctor.

If you’re not very healthy, your treatment could take up to a year. You must be patient. Once you truly heal the root problem, you will have made a successful transition and should be able to make enough estrogen to keep your body healthy for the rest of your life.

👉Creating Lifelong Health
As you enter menopause, you now have the last great opportunity to become truly healthy for the rest of your life. Take responsibility for your own health and healing. It’s not up to your doctor to fix you. If menopausal symptoms return, look to your daily lifestyle. Usually this means your everyday habits are still not balanced enough to help you heal yourself thoroughly. Tried to find out why your own energy support system is not functioning as it should. You may not be eating well, for example, or you may be working too hard or for too many hours. You may not have a peaceful heart, or you may be trying to cope with too much stress. All of these things can consume too much Qi—just at the time when you need to conserve it the most.

Gentle reminder for Portion size 🥗 to stay healthy and maintain balance:

✔️Protein
At each main meal, ensure you’re having 1-2 palm sized servings of your protein rich food of choice. This could be cooked meat, fish, 2 eggs or Greek yoghurt.

✔️Vegetables
Ensure you’re eating a variety of colourful vegetables and about a fist-size serving in your meals. Vegetables are an excellent source of fibre and vitamins & minerals that are essential for our health.

✔️Carbohydrates
The carbohydrate foods on your plate should fit into the cup of your hand. Examples include a small cup of grains like brown rice or pasta, quinoa, lentils, chickpeas or sweet potato, butternut squash.

✔️Fat
It’s important to also include a small serving of healthy unsaturated fats. Having these fats in your diet do not directly increase fat on your body. In fact, these fats are heart healthy, good for our brain and even our eyesight. These include extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, nut butter and avocado.

The Five Elements are a comprehensive template that organises all natural phenomena into five master groups or patterns in nature. Each of the five groups—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—include categories such as a season, a direction, climate, stage of growth and development, internal organ, body tissue, emotion, aspect of the soul, taste, color, sound . . . the categories are seemingly limitless. The Five Elements reflect a deep understanding of natural law, the Universal order underlying all things in our world.

It provides a master blueprint that diagrams how nature interacts with the body and how the different dimensions of our being impact each other. When studying the Five Element Framework it is important to emphasise that this multi-dimensional view of life offers a diagnostic framework to recognize where imbalances—body, mind, emotions, and spirit lie.
The Five Elements include the internal organs, and the interconnected relationships between them.

The Five Elements show us how the structures and systems in our bodies are connected to each other; how we are connected to our environment and the natural world; how our world is part of the greater universe.
Many people today have lost this deep connection to nature and no longer are able to feel this truth resonate in their being. The Universal principle of connection still exists nonetheless.

Change Your Thinking. Shift Your Life.

The way we approach a situation usually has an effect on its end result. If we walk into a room upset and angry, we may erupt in frustration as tensions escalate. On the other hand, if we take a deep breath and approach a situation from a place of understanding, we may gain a deeper level of appreciation and see a new side to the story.

When you change your thinking, you begin to see people and events from different perspectives. Doing so gives you the opportunity to shift your whole worldview. Anger melts away, frustration fizzles, and you’re left with a clean slate. Every situation gives you the chance to set new boundaries and adjust your emotional output, a.k.a. how much of your Qi you’re willing to spend in this emotion.

Imagine for a moment you are upset with your co-worker for their input on a shared project. You don’t feel they’ve put in their best work, and the boss’s criticism of the project falls on you. Do you have a right to be upset? Yes, of course.

But ask yourself this: Is it worth it? How much of yourself are you willing to spend in this emotion? What will you need to do to regain the Qi you lose in frustration and anger?
And what could you be using that Qi for instead?

Asking yourself these questions gives you time to pause and reset the moment. Instead of reacting, how can you let go, change your emotional response, and move forward? You might be surprised by the things that change when you approach people and situations from this new lens. Save your Qi! Use it instead to heal, grow, and move toward greater things in life.

The quest for a more holistic approach to health and wellbeing has led many to explore supplementary or complementary medicine. Unlike alternative medicine, which replaces traditional Western methods, complementary medicine seeks to complement and enhance the effectiveness of traditional approaches.

The range of complementary therapies offers numerous potential health benefits and options to suit all types of lifestyle preferences. From alleviating pain and reducing anxiety to improving mood and enhancing relaxation, these practices address various aspects of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Additionally, they may aid in wound healing, relieve muscle tension, boost flexibility and promote feelings of inner peace and positivity.

Complementary therapies encompass a wide array of practices, each targeting specific aspects of health and wellness. These include manipulation and body-based practices, mind-body techniques, energy force therapies, aromatherapy and expressive therapy.

Manipulation and Body-Based Practices

Manipulation and body-based practices offer tangible benefits to physical health and overall wellbeing. Techniques like massage therapy, reflexology and chiropractic care target the body’s musculoskeletal system, promoting relaxation, pain relief and improved mobility.

Massage eases muscle tension, enhances circulation and stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms.
Reflexology focuses on the pressure points in the feet, hands and ears, aiming to alleviate stress and restore balance within the body.
Chiropractic adjustments aim to realign the spine and joints, addressing issues such as back pain and improving nerve function.

Incorporating these practices into your holistic wellness routine can lead to a greater sense of vitality and physical comfort.

Mind-Body Techniques

Mind-body techniques emphasise the connection between mental and physical health. Practices like meditation, yoga and guided visualisation facilitate relaxation, stress reduction and emotional balance.

Meditation, mindfulness or focused breathing exercises promote a state of calm and heightened awareness, fostering mental clarity and resilience to stressors.
Yoga combines physical postures with breathwork and meditation, promoting flexibility, strength and inner peace.
Guided visualisation harnesses the power of imagination to evoke positive mental states and facilitate healing processes.

These techniques offer valuable tools for managing anxiety, improving sleep quality and cultivating a greater sense of self-awareness and emotional wellbeing.

Energy Force Therapies

Energy force therapies operate on the principle of balancing the body’s energy fields to promote health and vitality. Practices such as acupuncture, reiki and therapeutic touch are believed to facilitate the flow of vital energy, or Qi, within the body, thereby addressing imbalances and promoting healing.

Acupuncture, originating from traditional Chinese medicine, involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points along energy meridians to alleviate pain and restore equilibrium.
Reiki, a Japanese healing technique, channels universal life force energy through the practitioner’s hands to promote relaxation and emotional wellbeing.
Therapeutic touch incorporates gentle hand movements to balance energy fields and facilitate the body’s natural healing processes.

These therapies offer holistic approaches to addressing various physical and emotional ailments supporting overall wellbeing and vitality.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy harnesses the therapeutic properties of essential oils to promote physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Inhalation or topical application of essential oils derived from plants and herbs can evoke powerful physiological and psychological responses. Certain scents, such as lavender for relaxation or peppermint for alertness, can influence mood, reduce stress and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Additionally, essential oils like tea tree and eucalyptus possess antimicrobial properties, supporting immune function and respiratory health. Incorporating aromatherapy into daily routines through diffusers, massage oils or bath blends offers a natural and pleasant way to enhance overall wellness and create a soothing environment conducive to relaxation and rejuvenation.

Expressive Therapies

Expressive therapies encompass a diverse range of creative modalities aimed at fostering self-expression, emotional healing and personal growth. Practices such as art therapy, music therapy, dance/movement therapy and journal writing provide avenues for individuals to explore and process their thoughts, feelings and experiences.

Art therapy encourages the use of visual art mediums to express emotions, reduce stress and increase self-awareness.
Music therapy uses music and sound to promote relaxation, enhance mood and improve communication skills.
Dance/movement therapy incorporates movement and expression to facilitate emotional release and body awareness.
Journal writing serves as a tool for reflection, self-exploration and emotional processing.

These expressive modalities offer creative outlets for individuals to cultivate resilience, gain insight, and promote holistic wellbeing, tapping into the innate connection between creativity and healing.

At the core of supplementary medicine is breathwork and the use of our breathing to promote wellness and reduce anxiety and stress.
