❤️❤️❤️

A very big thank you to Penmellyn Vets in St Columb in Cornwall for taking such great care of our special little girl Bonnie today.

Bonnie went to her furever home last Friday after coming into our care sadly limping with a possible cruciate problem.
We had Bonnie scanned at Medivet Referrals here in Nottingham a few weeks ago that confirmed it was indeed a cruciate problem.

We decided to find Bonnie her furever home and promise to fund her cruciate repair so she could start her recovery at “home”
Bonnie was seen this morning and underwent the necessary surgery.

All went well and it’s been reported that Bonnie is all good, she has been for a short walk, had her tea and is very happy and lots of tail wags.
Bonnie will stay over night and be ready to be collected tomorrow.
Thank you Ailsa & Steve for loving her as much as we do.

Little Bonnie will be up and around in no time. The hard part will be keeping her quiet for the 6 week recovery period. 🙈

We have also promised to fund her physio and hydro program to ensure her correct rehabilitation.
This is really just as important as the operation itself.

Thank you also to our wonderful supporters who have also donated to us to help Bonnie.
Your kindness to our special rescues is so very much appreciated.
We may be only a small rescue but we give our all to every single one that is lucky enough to find us.

Edward will be looking down smiling knowing his rescue is safe in our paws, and it’s being run and managed just as he wished it to be.
Edward has himself graced Penmellyn vets a few times whilst being on his holidays in Cornwall so we know first hand how wonderful they are. 🤎🐾🌈
Team Edward, the small charity with the big ❤️

George🐾
Here we have the lovely George, a two-year-old chihuahua who was referred to us at the end of March. George was referred as he presented with bilateral Medial Patellar Luxation (MPL). This is where the knee cap dislocates inwards and is relatively common in small breed dogs.
MPL’s are usually diagnosed through a physical exam with a veterinary surgeon and diagnosis is confirmed through x-rays. They are graded depending on their severity on a scale of 1-4 (1 being mild and 4 being severe). Surgical intervention is usually recommended from grade 2 upwards.
Christian, our orthopaedic surgeon performed George’s surgery at the start of April, and he has made an excellent recovery. He spent a couple of days in hospital post operatively and then was discharged home, George was a really good boy during his stay in hospital and none of us could resist those puppy dog eyes! Here we have some adorable pictures of George with our orthopaedic nurse Damaris.

Meet Herman!
This handsome boy was recently referred to Cornwall Veterinary Referrals after he suddenly became lame whilst out on a walk, then became progressively more ataxic (wobbly on his back legs). He was examined by Christian Marchant, our certificate holding orthopaedic and spinal surgeon and RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery. Herman underwent a CT scan which showed that he had herniated an intervertebral disc at T12-T13 that was putting pressure on his spinal cord. Christian performed emergency decompressive spinal surgery (a hemilaminectomy) under the same anaesthetic.
After Herman’s surgery, he spent some time in the hospital recovering. He was put on a CRI (constant rate infusion) of pain relief and received intravenous fluid therapy to help aid him during recovery. We also performed massage and physiotherapy on him a few times daily to help build up strength and mobility, and aid with further pain relief. Herman was so brave and loved his physiotherapy sessions, walking outside in his sling, giving lots of kisses and playing with his favourite toy with our nursing team.
Since being home from hospital, Herman’s owner has reported he’s doing well and has even sent in an update photo of Herman having a sunbathe!
We are wishing Herman a smooth recovery.

Meet Ozzy🐾
Ozzy came in to us on Friday last week and saw our vet Amber, having not eaten and being very quiet and not himself.
He very rapidly deteriorated, becoming comatose and non-responsive over the next 2 hours. Initial ultrasound and blood tests didn’t reveal the underlying cause. Amber stabilised Ozzy and prepared him for a CT scan which we recommended and our vet Viola carried out, this had a very surprising finding-Ozzy had a 2 cm piece of wood in his brain stem. Injuries to the brain stem is very dangerous and life threatening.
The only option was to proceed to surgery to retrieve the stick from spinal column/brain. Two of our surgeons, Helen and Christian, came in on Saturday evening to carry out the complex procedure. Our head nurse Clare who has further training in anaesthesia, and our emergency vet Garrett managed the anaesthetic, as we expected complications due to the involvement of the brain.
While Ozzy initially was still comatose following surgery, and needed lots of support and constant intensive monitoring, within 24 hours he was back to his normal self, walking around the practice, wagging and eating well! What a wonderful boy!
