We were delighted to host a fantastic evening CPD event at St Columb, bringing together vets and nurses from across Cornwall for an engaging and informative session.

A huge thank you to two of our experienced referral vets:

Cassie shared insights on transient myocardial thickening in cats โ€“ a condition where the heart muscle can temporarily thicken, sometimes making cats appear seriously unwell, but which in some cases can improve significantly with the right care.

Helen explored nursing care in brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, including BOAS โ€“ focusing on how these pets can struggle with breathing and how veterinary teams can support them before, during, and after treatment to keep them comfortable and safe.

It was wonderful to see such a great turnout and so much enthusiasm for continued learning within our local veterinary community. We look forward to welcoming you to more CPD events in the future!

The most special boy, Alfie โœจ

Alfie came to see us after suddenly developing hindlimb lameness, within his own home, with no known trauma. Following his initial examination, he underwent imaging that revealed a tibial fracture in his left leg.

The fracture was very low down, likely caused by falling and getting his leg stuck during the fall. This also meant very little bone available to repair.

Our orthopaedic surgeon, Christian, and his team carried out the fracture fixation, using 2 plates to accommodate this small bone fragment. Post-operative X-rays showed excellent implant positioning and alignment โ€” just what we hoped for ๐Ÿค

Alfie stayed with us afterwards, receiving lots of care (and plenty of love) from our hospital team until he was comfortable and ready to return home to his wonderful owners.

Wishing this brave and loveable boy a smooth and speedy recovery ๐Ÿพ

Tongue out Tuesday with this incredibly handsome chap! ๐Ÿ‘…๐Ÿ’™

Charlie recently came to see us after his owner noticed a lump on his chest. After performing FNAs (fine needle aspirates), the results suggested it could possibly be a low-grade mast cell tumour.

To make sure there was no sign of spread, an ultrasound scan was recommended. The good news was that the scan came back clear, which meant our vet, Helen Wood โ€” a skilled Certificate holder in small animal surgery โ€” was able to proceed with surgery to remove the tumour and help prevent it from spreading.

The surgery itself was intricate, requiring careful removal of the tumour with appropriate margins to give Charlie the very best outcome. After a long healing process (and 40 staples later! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ), weโ€™re delighted to say heโ€™s now back to being his happy, bouncy self! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’™

Charlie was a very brave boy throughout, and weโ€™re so pleased we were able to help him get the treatment he needed.

๐Ÿ’ก ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ โ€” if you ever notice a new lump or bump on your pet, itโ€™s always best to get it checked sooner rather than later. Early detection can make all the difference.

Patient Success Story๐Ÿค

Poppy was rushed to us out of hours after ingesting metaldehyde (slug bait). She arrived collapsed with severe tremors, a very high temperature and a dangerously fast heart rate.

Poppy was instantly placed under anaesthetic with continuous monitoring so we could keep on top of her condition. She initially received bolus fluids and an e***a and Gastric lavage using cool water to reduce core temperature and remove any slug bait, a significant amount was removed from both.

After a significant amount of time Poppy came out of the anaesthetic and things began to stable however she had extreme petechiae and intestinal bleeding and showing signs of DIC (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation), this is a condition that means the body is unable to clot and Poppy was in a life threatening state.

Poppyโ€™s owners were incredibly dedicated to getting her through this, and Poppy received a Fresh Frozen Plasma transfusion with another one being administered 12 hours later. After a long stay in hospital and with multiple organ dysfunctions (renal impairment, gastrointestinal issues, raised liver enzyme activity, high blood pressure and reduced cardiac contractility) Poppy eventually made a remarkable improvement and was able to be discharged to her family after 6 days.

Poppy was an extremely stoic and brave patient, who along with the help of our team and her invested owners fought hard to get better๐Ÿค

Meet Ruby! ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ

Ruby visited us for her annual health check and vaccinations, where it was recommended she undergo a dental procedure. During her examination, our vet also detected a grade 1 heart murmur โ€” so we took extra precautions to ensure her safety before proceeding.

Due to the potential anaesthetic risks, Ruby had an echocardiogram performed prior to her dental treatment. This was carried out by our highly skilled vet, Cassie, who holds multiple certifications and is currently working towards advanced practitioner status in cardiology.

The ultrasound revealed Ruby has degenerative mitral valve disease at preclinical stage B1. The great news is that no treatment is required at this stage โ€” but she will need ongoing monitoring with repeat scans to keep a close eye on her heart health.

Ruby then went into the capable hands of our operations team for her dental procedure, where 13 teeth were removed. Following her treatment, she was monitored closely by our day patient nurse throughout her recovery until she was fully awake and ready to head home.

Ruby recovered beautifully and was soon back to enjoying snacks!

This case highlights the incredible collaboration between our multidisciplinary team to ensure every pet receives the safest and highest standard of care. ๐Ÿพโœจ

Meet Squidgy, a 2-month-old Jack Russell puppy who was referred to us by Kernow Veterinary Group

Squidgy was diagnosed with congenital phimosis, meaning he was unable to protrude his p***s due to a narrowed preputial opening which made him unable to pass urine normally. He underwent surgery with us to carefully widen the opening and allow normal function.

His procedure was performed by our highly skilled Helen Wood, Certificate Holder in Small Animal Surgery, and weโ€™re pleased to say he is healing really well and recovering beautifully. ๐Ÿ’™

Well done to everyone involved in his care โ€” and especially to Squidgy for being such a brave little patient! โœจ

Bali the Brave ๐ŸŒบ

This sweet little Chihuahua x Pomeranian recently came in to see us for surgery to correct a luxating patella (kneecap) in her right hind leg. The procedure performed is called a Tibial Crest Transposition (TCT).

Bali has quite the story ๐Ÿ’› She was rescued at just 4 months old with a right femoral fracture, which was surgically repaired (you can see this on her X-ray). Because she was so young and still growing at the time of her fracture repair, she later went on to experience intermittent luxation of her right patella.

For years, these episodes were infrequent and managed incredibly well by her dedicated owner. Recently, however, her lameness became more frequent and started to cause her regular discomfort. After assessment with our Head of Referrals, Christian Marchant, it was decided that surgery would give Bali the best long-term outcome and comfort.

Her TCT surgery was performed to carefully realign the patella so it sits securely back within the femoral groove. She is now on a strict 6-week rest plan, including cage rest and controlled lead walks, to allow everything to heal properly.

Weโ€™re so pleased to say that Bali is recovering beautifully ๐Ÿ’• Sheโ€™s been a very good girl, resting well at home, and has started gentle physiotherapy and passive range of motion exercises. Sheโ€™ll also be starting post-operative hydrotherapy with the wonderful team at Downward Dog Physio to help her regain strength safely.

Weโ€™re all rooting for you, Bali โ€” youโ€™ve got this! ๐Ÿพโœจ

Danzyโ€™s Story ๐Ÿพ

Danzy was referred to us after experiencing multiple episodes of syncope (fainting) and cyanosis, with raspy breathing.

He had a consultation with one of our highly skilled vets, Helen Wood who holds a post graduate Certificate in Small Animal Surgery. He then had advanced imaging including an echocardiogram and CT scan of his chest and neck and thorough blood testing to get to the root of the problem.

After reviewing the results, the best course of action was determined to be a laryngeal tie-back surgery (a procedure that permanently opens one side of the larynx to improve airflow).

Danzy was prepped for surgery the very next day, and Helen successfully performed the procedure. Within just a few hours, Danzy was already breathing normally again.

Weโ€™re delighted to share that Danzy has made a full recovery and his parents are extremely chuffed! He now has a much-improved quality of life and is back to being his lovely, happy self ๐Ÿพโœจ

Well done, Danzy! ๐Ÿ’™

Meet Rosie-Beryl, a sweet 6-year-old cockapoo with a heart full of love. โค๏ธ

During a routine groom, Rosieโ€™s groomer noticed some unusual swellings. Her owner wisely decided to investigate further โ€” and these swellings were found to be enlarged lymph nodes. To determine the cause, fine needle aspirates were performed.

Sadly, the results revealed that Rosie had large B-cell lymphoma, the most common and aggressive form of cancer in dogs.

Rosie has since started regular chemotherapy treatments under the care of certificate holder in medicine - Dr. Cassie Kilty, and she has been an absolute star throughout. ๐ŸŒŸ

Weโ€™re so proud of her strength and resilience โ€” and weโ€™re sending all the love and support to Rosie and her family. ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿถ

Just a little update to make our neighbouring practices aware we have just made a significant investment in updating our foreign body retrieval tools and biopsies equipment as part of our endoscopy suite.๐Ÿคฉ

If anyone has any cases requiring these kinds of interventions we are happily receiving referrals. Please feel free to email or phone.๐Ÿ“ž

This is a minimally invasive and very effective option for treatment of foreign body ingestion or diagnostic tool for animals requiring investigation of gastrointestinal symptoms.
