I am always talking to patients about crossing their legs. As a leg-crosser myself I know it is a hard habit to break. We often have a favourite side and our body gets used to this position. This is the problem. If you are a leg-crosser, try to cross your legs the other way and it will feel awkward. This repeated pattern of behaviour, of having a favourite side, leads to joints getting stiff and fixed over time. As Chiropractors we strive to keep the body mobile by introducing adjustments into the joints. Pelvic stiffness, particularly in the sacro-iliac joints can cause a patient to have aches and pains and are a reason many patients see a Chiropractor. To practise not crossing your legs, try not to do it over a long period of time and if that is not possible try to cross your legs for shorter amounts of time and switch which legs you are crossing. This is less likely to create stiffness and inbalances in the pelvis, spine, hip joints and knees. Also, don't be hard on yourself. This can take a few years to perfect, before it is second nature not to cross your legs.
