We were many; they were few!

Now that the dust has settled and Daisy Hill has it's Safe Zone, we felt that it was time to thank all of you for your unstinting support for the women of Newry.

With Precious Life and it's acolytes pushed physically and metaphorically to the margins, the task of removing their hate filled attacks on patients, visitors and staff has been successful; this would not have been possible without the spirit of community and collective resistance to their intimidation.

The battle to end violence against women and girls and, indeed, all marginalised and vulnerable groups, is far from over but this victory is a small step towards that goal.

Thank you all for your steadfast support.

We at Supporting Women Newry are very pleased to see movement on the last stage of the process to ensure safe access to healthcare. Rest assured, we will be monitoring its implementation.

Good news that Safe Access Zones outside health care facilities will be implemented by the Trust from September. No one should face harassment or intimidation when accessing healthcare.

BRIEF UPDATE.

As we are sure you are aware, the law has changed and safe zones are now in operation .
It is now ILLEGAL to protest outside any of our family planning clinics .
The weekly protesters at the gates of our beloved Daisy hill hospital are now in breaking the law and should be moved on by those who are employed to uphold the law.
We have contacted the PSNI who are currently in “talks with the Southern Trust” in relation to designating such zones.
There appears to be some confusion that the zone may start from the door of entry, which would practically mean they could still protest near the gate.

We wish to make it perfectly clear to the Trust and the PSNI that (as with all levels of legal responsibility) Safe zones start where your staff and service users leave the public highway and enter your grounds.
This principle has been enforced for years when Trade unions were on strike so cannot now be pushed aside.
Women have the right to access healthcare without fear of intimidation and harassment.
They have gone through the proper channels, they have been patient, they have raised the issue with public representatives and followed through until the wheels of justice turned and the law changed.

That time has come and passed.
The time for talking is over!!!

It’s now time the PSNI upheld the law of the land.
