Self-Confidence is something which many athletes struggle with and one of the ways it manifests itself is in comparing ourselves to others, teammates, opponents, idol, competitors; we regularly focus on the ability of those we feel we are competing against or want to be more like as well as worrying about how coaches compare us to our teammates.

intimidating ourselves into thinking we are not goo enough is one of the fastest ways to negatively impact your performance.

Do you:
➡️Worry too much about the quality of your competition?
➡️Criticise yourself?
➡️Think of past mistakes and poor performances?
➡️Worry about what could go wrong?

These can all affect your self-confidence.

❔What can you do?

Self-Awareness is key 🔑

✅Recognise when you focus more on the ability of others than yourself.
✅If you think you are paying too much attention to your opposition; make yourself stop.
✅Use mental imagery to visualise yourself at your best.

While you are comparing yourself to others, remember this:
👨‍👩‍👧‍👧EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES
❎Mistakes are one of the best ways to learn and improve; embrace them!

Rather than focusing on how well others perform, remember the skills and talent you have, the challenges you have overcome, and the positive performances you have put in to get where you are today.

No Pain, No Gain?

Pain serves as an important construct to:
>WARN of impending or already present trauma

>INFORM athletes that they may have reached their level of optimal load

It is never advised to ignore pain, but it is possible to use mental skills to increase pain tolerance.

Techniques such as:

👁visualisation
🧘‍♀️mindfulness training
💬self talk
🥅goal setting

Can all be utilised to increase pain tolerance, making us more resistant to unpleasant sensations, allowing athletes to train through the inevitable pain associated with sport.

Often emblazoned on the walls of training studios and gyms, it’s a mantra most of us are familiar with. It seems to be an unwritten rule that athletes are expected to have a higher pain tolerance than those not involved in sport, and to some extent, this may well be the case. However, when is trai...
