I heard something today at the end of a pilates class and it really made me think about the trend of "wellness" at present. Pretty much everything, when packaged a certain way, claiming to improve our "wellness" - as if staying fit and healthy is a trend we should be keeping up on before another craze sweeps the country.
A few thoughts:
1/ Getting people to move more in a generally sedentary society is a great thing.
2/ Movement and exercise is one of best things you can do for your physical and mental health. There is an oft quoted phrase in physio- "if exercise was a pill, it would be the most widely prescribed drug on the planet".
3/ Exercising to achieve a certain body composition, if that is your goal and done in a supportive manner for your physical and mental health, is a perfectly noble goal.

However, when movement becomes more about the aesthetic than the benefits for your health, when the pressure to fit a certain mould costs you your ease, ask yourself is it really worth it? If attending a gym/class/ studio leaves you questioning whether or not you fit in there, then take it from a professional- the problem is not you, it's them. Wherever and however you choose to move to look after your physical and mental health should be of benefit to both- one shouldn't cost the other. It's simply not worth it.

Toxicity masquerading as "wellness", that's actually just more pressure to fit to certain ideal seems to be rife at present. Don't fall for it. It's simply a other way to make you feel insecure. You're perfect as you are, and your body is not a fashion trend.

NEWRY & ARMAGH PBP REPRESENTATIVE CALLS FOR HALT TO PLANS FOR NEWRY CIVIC CENTRE

Tomorrow Newry Mourne & Down District councillors will vote on the controversial £18m Newry Civic Centre plans with People Before Profit calling for the project not to go ahead.

PBP Newry & Armagh representative Marc Mac Seáin said,

“At least £10m of the unnecessary costs for this controversial white elephant will come from district residents residents, who’ve already had significant rates increases over the past number of years never-mind the eye watering costs of the confused Mourne Gateway project projected to be as much as £50m.

“These ludicrous spends come at the same time as people still live through a cost of living crisis, as the Stormont social housing builds are due to be eviscerated by more than half for 2025, disability support is cut, whilst GP & hospital services are cut to the brink which is most acutely felt in our under resourced border community. The proposed Newry Health Hub remains completely up in the air.

Mr Mac Seáin concluded, “We urgently need investments in our communities and services, improvements in people’s material conditions rather than this unnecessary Civic Centre.”

Did you know that we welcome walk ins for our mat work classes?
Unlike our reformer classes, you can just pop in if you fancy a little mat work, with no prebooking necessary.
Simply turn up to class with some water and clothes you're comfortable to move in and we'll do the rest! You don't even need to bring a mat!
Mat takes place on Monday at 6pm with Arlene (physio-led), and Thursday at 7pm with Jamie. Both classes are suitable for all abilities and beginners are very, very welcome.

We had such a lovely evening at at the launch of their new 1742 lounge - we were treated to skincare, hair and beauty tips, a fashion show, gorgeous food and cocktails and of course the signature Canal Court service from their wonderful staff.
Looking forward to the next excuse to get dolled up and sip cocktails!

Physio led pilates- learn from the best!

We are the ONLY place in Newry where you will find matwork, pregnancy, postnatal and reformer sessions under one roof, along with a specialist Women’s Health Physiotherapy service- catering for women of all ages.

As Physios, we know the value of keeping the body strong and supple at all stages of life and our classes cater for all abilities, including pregnancy and post natal classes. All classes are run by APPI qualified Physiotherapists. Physiotherapy can help put you “back in your body” after pregnancy and delivery and we believe all women should have access to postnatal care to improve their quality of life both now and for the years to come.

The Reformer is a large piece of Pilates equipment where we work with you 1:1 or in a group setting- using a spring loaded carriage to challenge, strengthen and stretch your body at your own pace. It is suitable for athletes, weekend warriors and those with chronic health conditions alike.

The Mummy MOT is a service for mums- suitable from six weeks but it is never “too late” to have a pelvic health check. The MOT is a full physiotherapist check of your posture, breathing, tummy muscles and pelvic floor. Any issues you may be experiencing are taken into account and a rehab programme designed specifically for you is given. It is recommended for all mums whether you are experiencing symptoms or not- put yourself in the driving seat of your recovery by getting to know where your body is at and how you can aid a return to pre-pregnancy levels of activity safely.
