UPDATE - Statute Law Revision Bill, 2024 - this Bill was passed by DΓ‘il Γ‰ireann this evening (Wednesday 09 July 2025) and will now go to His Excellency, President Michael D. Higgins, for signature.

On the link below - please see page 10 - Schedule 2 - Items revoked. The Genealogical Society of Ireland was successful in having the anachronistic and obsolete 1685 Proclamation revoked. Indeed, our argument also resulted in the amending of the Statute Law Revision Act, 2015, to remove circa 40 obsolete instruments that were retained in that legislation in error based, no doubt, on a misunderstanding of the legislative basis of Irish heraldic services.

Irish heraldic services, once again, for the avoidance of any doubt whatsoever, are based entirely on the National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997, sections 12 and 13 and absolutely nothing else. This Act was commenced on 3rd May 2005.

The outstanding issue concerning the grants made by the Chief Heralds of Ireland between March 1943 and May 2005 is the subject of draft legislation prepared by the Society and currently under consideration for publication.

Thanks to the Minister Emer Higgins, TD, and her department and, of course, to Senator Victor Boyhan for presenting our case.
