Did you know diabetes affects blood vessels and nerves in the feet? 👣

Patients with diabetes are at greater risk of arterial disease than the general population, this is because raised blood sugar levels over a long period can cause damage to blood vessels in your feet which can lead to reduced blood flow and impaired healing to injury or infection.

All patients with diabetes should have their vascular status assessed regularly depending on their risk category.

From the moment patients enter my clinic, I’m already assessing by watching the way they walk into the room and sit on a chair. I inspect your footwear, hosiery and examine the integrity of your skin for hair growth, colour, texture, temperature, and swelling. Using my fingers I feel for two pulses (Dorsalis Pedis and Posterior Tibialis) on your feet. Then, I’ll use a Doppler ultrasound device to listen to the sounds of the pulses to establish if they are triphasic, biphasic, or monophasic.

Diabetic patients are at an increased risk of diabetic neuropathy which is damage to the nerves on their feet. There are three types of nerve damage that can occur as a complication of poorly controlled diabetes - Motor Neuropathy - which affects foot posture leading to high-pressure areas, Autonomic Neuropathy – which affects sweat and sebaceous glands leading to dry cracked skin and Sensory Neuropathy - which leads to loss of sensation.

👣 Let's step into the world of heel pain, a common complaint among many of our patients. 🦶

Heel pain can sneak up on you, affecting your daily activities and overall quality of life. But before you fall into the rabbit hole of 'Doctor Google', it's crucial to recognise that heel pain can stem from various conditions, each requiring specific treatments. Here's why professional diagnosis is key:

1️⃣ Plantar Fasciitis: The infamous culprit of heel pain, often felt as a stabbing sensation with your first steps in the morning.

2️⃣ Achilles Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendon connecting your calf muscles to your heel.

3️⃣ Heel Spurs: Calcium deposits that can develop under your heel bone, often linked to plantar fasciitis.

4️⃣ Stone Bruise: This deep bruise on the fat pad of the heel can occur after stepping on a hard object.

5️⃣ Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac at the heel's back.

6️⃣ Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: A trapped nerve can cause pain that radiates to the heel.

7️⃣ Stress Fractures: Tiny cracks in the heel bone often due to repetitive stress.

8️⃣ Sever's Disease: A growth plate injury, most common in athletic children.

9️⃣ Haglund's Deformity: A bony enlargement on the back of the heel that can lead to painful bursitis.

🔟 Arthritis: Joint inflammation that can affect the heel, particularly in older adults.

Misdiagnosis can lead to ineffective treatment or even exacerbate your condition. That's why we at Feet First Podiatry emphasise the importance of consulting with a qualified podiatrist rather than self-diagnosing. Our experts are trained to differentiate between these conditions, ensuring you receive the correct treatment to get back on your feet pain-free.

Remember, every step towards proper foot health counts. Trust your heels in the hands of professionals! 👟💚

Are you struggling with stubborn verrucae that just won't budge? It's time to step into the future of podiatric care with Swift Microwave Therapy! ⚡️

For too long, many have turned to over-the-counter treatments like salicylic acid and freezing methods, only to be met with disappointment. These traditional remedies have less than a 30% success rate, often leading to a frustrating cycle of ineffective treatment. But why waste precious time when there's a revolutionary solution at your feet?

Verrucae, those pesky skin lesions, are caused by the highly contagious Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which invades the skin through tiny cuts or scrapes. While it's true that many verrucae will eventually clear up on their own, this isn’t always the case. For those dealing with painful or persistent verrucae, waiting for them to disappear is not a viable option.

Enter Swift Microwave Therapy: a cutting-edge technology that targets verrucae at their core. Swift uses controlled microwaves to stimulate a natural immune response in the body, effectively treating the verruca without the need for dressings or anesthetics. The treatment is quick, clean, and incredibly efficient.

At Feet First Podiatry, we're dedicated to providing our patients with the best care possible. That's why we're proud to offer Swift Microwave Therapy as a game changer for those suffering from recalcitrant verrucae. With Swift, you can say goodbye to ineffective treatments and hello to clear, healthy skin.

Don't let verrucae hold you back any longer. Take the first step with Feet First Podiatry and experience the swift difference today! Your feet will thank you. 👟✨

Ingrown toenails might seem like a small issue, but they can cause significant pain and discomfort, especially among our vibrant young population who are often the most affected. Why young people, you ask? Well, it's a combination of active lifestyles, sports, tight footwear, and sometimes a genetic predisposition that causes the nail to grow into the surrounding skin.

🚶‍♂️Causes of Ingrown Toenails:
- Improper nail trimming: Cutting your nails too short or not straight across can encourage them to grow into the skin.
- Tight shoes: Footwear that crowds the toes can push the nail into the surrounding tissue.
- Injury: Stubbing your toe or other traumas can lead to abnormal nail growth.
- Sweaty feet: Excessive sweat can soften the skin around the nails, making it easier for the nail to pierce through.
- Nail structure: Naturally curved or thick nails may be more prone to becoming ingrown.

🩹 Treatment Options:
1. Conservative Care: This includes trimming small spicules of the nail from the sides.

2. Nail Bracing: A non-invasive technique where a special brace is applied to the nail to gently straighten it over time, alleviating the pressure on the skin.

3. Nail Surgery: For persistent or severe cases, we offer a permanent solution through nail surgery. This minor procedure involves removing a portion of the nail and applying a chemical to the nail matrix to prevent the ingrown part from coming back.

Don't let ingrown toenails keep you off your toes! At Feet First Podiatry, we're here to ensure your feet are happy and healthy. Remember, early intervention is key to preventing complications. If you're struggling with an ingrown toenail, step into our clinic and step out with relief. 🚶‍♀️💙

Pitted Keratolysis is a bacterial condition affecting the soles of your feet. 👣

The group of bacteria that cause this condition thrive in warm and moist conditions and the odour is caused by the bacteria releasing a sulfur compound.

You are most at risk of developing pitted keratolysis if you have naturally sweaty feet or regularly wear shoes with limited airflow.

It’s most common in people who work in certain occupations where you spend most of the day on your feet such as military personnel, athletes, or farmers.

Symptoms include:
‣ Foul odour.
‣ White areas of damp skin
‣ Tiny pits or patches that look like little holes in the skin.
‣ Itchiness.
‣ In severe cases, pits can form clusters resulting in painful lesions (sores).

Pitted keratolysis isn’t contagious and can’t spread from person to person.

We can diagnose this condition at Feet First Clinic and prescribe a course of treatment as well as provide advice on footwear and general foot health.

If you are experiencing this condition, please don’t suffer - make an appointment today with our highly experienced podiatrist Judith. 🩵

Cracked heels, or heel fissures occur when the skin around the bottom of your heel becomes very dry and hard. When the skin becomes very dry it can split forming cracks or fissures.

Anyone can get cracked heels but some people with certain health conditions are at an increased risk of developing heel fissures.

Health conditions such as:
👉🏻 Diabetes
👉🏻 Peripheral neuropathy
👉🏻 Poor circulation

Tips to help prevent heel fissures:
🦶Cream your feet every evening with a foot cream high in urea content (we love Flexitol Heel Balm 25% Urea).
🦶File your feet with a pumice stone or foot file before moisturising.
🦶soak your feet in urea foot bathes
