This week we got some insight from winger Abby Nield and why she chose to join E&K Ladies in the summer. Abby has played at much higher levels and has shown her abilities consistently so far this season.

So, we askedโ€ฆ why E&K? โ€˜A few reasons tbh. It all started when I saw the club set up a fb page and I started following it because I knew Ant and Rhys, I also saw Mollie H and Hannah W played (who I used to play with at Priory).. so although I was at another club, I was loving the social posts and kinda wanted to join (I was getting fomo)!! Then PerCurra sponsored the team and at that time, I knew Craig (PerCurra Care Manager) and Tash because they were looking after my grandad (he was bed bound and needed 24 hour care and they were giving it to him), so when I saw they sponsored the side, it really meant something to me and I really wanted to be a part of it. I was low key glad when my old team folded because I was in a predicament of having come along to training and really enjoying it. I felt like I enjoyed football again and it was just good vibes, exactly what I wanted!! So multiple reasons really, it all came together!
Iโ€™ve got my confidence back playing at this level and itโ€™s super fun!โ€™.

We then asked about how the season has started for her personally and for the team. Abby said, โ€˜The season so far has had its ups and downs, generally though when you look at which league weโ€™re in, weโ€™re doing really well. An entry level team against teams that have been together for years. Itโ€™s a sign of things to come!. Personally I need to start scoring goals again.. I promise itโ€™s coming soonโ€™.

Success comes in many forms, as too achievements, so we asked Abby what she aimed to achieve this season. โ€˜I just want to have fun. I hope we finish the season in a good position in the league, but ultimately I just want to win some games, score some goals and enjoy it!โ€™

Abby then described the group that we have here at E&K. She said, โ€˜Amazing bunch. The vibes are always positive and some of them are actually quite funny! I was at my old team for over 5 years and I never saw myself leaving. Coming to a new team was a huge deal to me, but Iโ€™ve loved every minute of it and I canโ€™t wait to see where this team ends up!!โ€™

Big thanks to Abby for giving us her view! ๐ŸŸกโšซ๏ธ

Sherwood Colliery 6๏ธโƒฃ- 1๏ธโƒฃ E&K Ladies

It was a disaster at Debdale as E&K Ladies fell to a heavy 6-1 defeat against Sherwood Colliery in a tough away fixture, with a string of defensive errors proving costly.

Sherwood Colliery took control early on, and after just 10 minutes, they were awarded a penalty when Chelsea brought down a midfielder bursting forward. The penalty was calmly dispatched past Tash, giving Sherwood the lead.

E&K struggled to establish any rhythm, finding themselves pinned into their own half for large spells. The balance wasnโ€™t right and despite their efforts to regroup and assert themselves on the game, they went into halftime trailing 1-0.

HT - Sherwood Coliiery 1-0 E&K Ladies

The restart brought immediate disaster for E&K. A sequence of x3 poor short passes straight from kick-off allowed Sherwood to pounce, stealing the ball and smashing it past Tash to double their lead in the 46th minute.

Just four minutes later, more defensive uncertainty compounded their problems. A poor pass wide led to scrappy defending, and after Tash slipped trying to save an initial shot, the ball squirmed loose and was poked home for 3-0.

E&K made some changes, and signs of life appeared. A sustained period of pressure followed, and in the 65th minute, Maisie came close to pulling one back, hitting the bar after a well-worked team move.

In the 70th minute, E&Kโ€™s efforts were rewarded. Lydia lofted a well-timed ball over the top to Ella, who drove into the box and slotted home to make it 3-1, offering a glimmer of hope. However, the joy was short-lived as Sherwood immediately responded from the restart, a powerful strike from the edge of the box beating Tash to restore the three-goal margin, 4-1.

Tensions flared in the 80th minute when a Sherwood player clattered into E&Kโ€™s stopper after a late challenge. The goalkeeper reacted, sparking a flashpoint, but players stepped in to diffuse the situation. The referee booked the Sherwood player for the foul and we continued.

E&Kโ€™s day worsened in the final stages. In the 85th minute, Ellie misjudged a corner clearance, sending the ball up but the ball hit Tashโ€™s chest as she went to catch it and it fell into the net for an unfortunate own goal, making it 5-1. Sherwood capped off the rout in the 89th minute, as a failure to clear the lines allowed a player to run through and smash home the sixth.

FT Score - Sherwood Colliery 6 - 1 E&K Ladies

A difficult day for E&K Ladies who are now starting to understand the task that faces them each week. Sherwood were a more physical side than any opposition faced so far and maybe that is a part to our game we need to improve. Weโ€™ll dust ourselves off and look to regroup as we return to our home ground next week against Woodhouse Colts. We learn, we move.

E&K Ladies 3๏ธโƒฃ - 2๏ธโƒฃ Bingham Town

Ella Smallwood โšฝ๏ธโšฝ๏ธ
Hannah Lewis โšฝ๏ธ

A thrilling encounter opened up the season and E&K Ladies first competitive game. Bingham Town were the visitors and saw E&K come fighting back from two goals down to claim a dramatic 3-2 victory thanks to a last-minute winner from Hannah Lewis.

The match got off to a rocky start for E&K, as Bingham Town capitalized on an early lapse in the defence In the 5th minute. A break, down the left flank allowed their winger to send a low ball into the six-yard box, which was fired home to put Bingham Town 1-0 up.

Usually itโ€™s E&K with the fast start but not this time.

Tash Stevenson was called into action a few times and when a couple of one on one situations occurred, showed assurance & composure to deal with the threats superbly.

Despite efforts to regain control of the game, Bingham were not allowing it to happen and the opposition doubled their lead in the 35th minute. A long ball forward caused confusion, with a missed header, allowing Bingham's striker to run through on goal and finish clinically. 0-2 and a mountain to climb it seemed for E&K.

HT - E&K 0-2 Bingham Town

After a tough first half, a couple of changes and a few words around relaxing and playing football, E&K came out with renewed energy and composure. They forced heavy pressure from the restart and looked much more dangerous going forward, with an improved shape and intensity despite no formation change. Manager Ant Watkinson was sticking to his guns when others may have waivered.

Their persistence paid off in the 55th minute when Ella Smallwood pulled one back with a stunning free kick. Positioned outside the box, she struck the ball perfectly over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to make it 2-1.

Just 15 minutes later, Ella was at it again. A brilliant solo run saw her break through Binghamโ€™s defence and calmly slot the ball past the keeper, levelling the score at 2-2.

There was a prolonged stoppage as around the 75th minute, firstly Ella went down with a facial injury resulting in a nose bleed and from the resulting free kick, an opposition player went down with severe cramp. Then moments later, another Bingham player fell to ground with what looked a nasty knee injury. We of course wish said player well and hope all is ok.

As the game entered stoppage time, both teams pressed for a winner, but it was E&K who found the decisive breakthrough. In the 95th minute, Hannah Lewis reacted quickest from a corner, flicking the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net to complete the comeback and secure a stunning 3-2 win.

Jubilation at the full time whistle and a fantastic advert for womenโ€™s football.

We thank Bingham Town for the game and wish them well for the rest of the season ๐Ÿค

WOTM ๐Ÿ†: Mel Ward (Voted by opposition)

Mel Ward was exceptional throughout, showing resilience and leadership during a tough first half, and contributing massively to the teamโ€™s second-half turnaround defensively.

๐Ÿ’ญ This victory marked a statement performance for E&K, displaying their fighting spirit and determination to sn**ch the win after a very challenging start. The โ€˜squadโ€™ played its part and showed the importance of having maximum bodies available, all playing their role in a stunning turn around. A tough shift from everyone but we dug in.

Big thank you to all who were along to support the group. You helped spur them on.
