PHEW WOT A SCORCHER ☀️ Traditional Chinese healthcare advice on how to thrive in a heatwave.

Fibromyalgia: It’s good to see some quality research coming out on the treatment of this unpleasant and life-sapping condition.

It should come as no surprise to anybody with a long-term involvement in Traditional Chinese Acupuncture that the therapy performs very well indeed as compared with pharmaceuticals such as Amitryptaline.

What I would add though, is that a patient’s expectations should be geared towards a course of treatment, rather than any ‘quick fix’. There just aren’t any quick fixes for this! I am also a keen advocate of mixing Acupuncture with deep tissue massage for Fibromyalgia – the Chinese Tui Na massage I practice is perfect for the job, although Sports Injury Massage would also work well.

Another potential benefit of Acupuncture, not really detailed in the article, is that it helps tremendously with the ‘roller coaster’ of emotional fallout that Fibromyalgia can often bring on. In my experience this is very bit as important as dealing with the pain and exhaustion that the condition inevitably brings with it.

Acupuncture produces fibromyalgia, according to independent research.

I am a qualified, accredited and insured member of NADA GB. For more information or to book a treatment at The Haven, please visit my website:

NADA is famous for principally two things: the treatment of trauma and PTSD, and also Detox from Substance or Alcohol Abuse. It is recognised as a potential treatment of choice by The International Red Cross and the NHS, amongst others.

In practice, NADA is highly effective for a great many issues apart from trauma or detox: stress, anxiety, depression, menopause, ‘burnout’ syndromes and insomnia to name but a few.

July 19th is the much advertised ‘Freedom Day’ in England. Understandably, a few of my patients have expressed concern about how this might affect Covid-19 protocols in the treatment room.

As yet I have had no formal guidance from the Government on what measures therapists will be required to take regarding PPE, sanitising etc. Just this morning I received an email from my governing body, the BAcC (British Acupuncture Council), just to let me know that they too have heard nothing. So, as things stand I am clearly going to have to set my own policy as we move forward – and here it is!

As from July 19th I shall continue to wear PPE and observe Covid-related protocols just as I have been doing throughout the pandemic. This will not change for the foreseeable future, even if the government announces a relaxation of these measures and declassifies them as a legal requirement. (This is quite likely, I think).

Inevitably the time will eventually come when none of these measures will be necessary, but with infection and even death rates on the rise I would hazard a guess that a genuine ‘freedom day’ might yet be a long way off. Until then – safety first! I have also already begun a programme of regular lateral flow testing, and will of course self-isolate and inform my patients should I ever test positive. So far I seem to have escaped the dreaded bug entirely, which suggests the measures really do work - but there’s still no room for complacency.

I hope this little announcement helps to clarify my position and set people’s minds at ease.

Stay safe, everybody!

Having worked in a fair few Complementary Health clinics over the years, what I’ve noticed is that, sooner or later, each one turns into a community asset. Local people come to value the support they get in exactly the same way as, say, they value their hairdresser, post office or corner shop. These are the everyday places that help bind a community together. It’s great then, that The Haven Clinic is able to take part in the Ashburton Loyalty Card scheme. We’re happy to provide you with cards and stamp them for you too! It’s all just part of being part of the town.

It’s good to see this highly positive article on the effectiveness of acupuncture for pain relief in cancer sufferers. In my experience pain relief is just one part of the equation. I’ve used acupuncture repeatedly in helping cancer sufferers deal with the emotional and physical fallout from, for example, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. It can make a huge difference!
