Congratulations if you guessed right! Our brand new subject is 'Eating, drinking, and swallowing' - mapped to Level 3 competency as set out by Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
This session brings together knowledge about what can cause difficulties with eating, drinking, and swallowing, and how to support people experiencing dysphagia.
Joseph, who is our Office Manager and the facilitator for this subject, said: 'Skills for Care is aiming for 80% of all care-facing staff to be trained to Level 3 competency within 5 years. This training meets that aim well in advance'
'This session has been a long time in the making, and has had a lot of influences. So thank you to Rowcroft Hospice and Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust for your amazing training sessions. Thank you to Parkinson's UK, Dementia UK, Alzheimer's Research UK, MND Association, Marie Curie UK, Headway Devon amongst others for your public information which helped to inform parts of this session. And thank you to the various YouTube channels from whom I sourced videos of swallowing studies to show the structures of swallowing in action.
'The first session was really positive, though we overran slightly, but that was because we had a nice chat about different content points and related it to experiences we'd all had in our careers. And I was really pleased that our work experience student from Exeter College joined us for the first session, as well!'
