I came across an infographic this morning, which linked to an article titled 'Why Art Therapy is better than Talk Therapy' and I wanted to share some thoughts.
I really push back on messages like this, and don't subscribe to the notion that one therapy is better than another. I believe every modality has its place.
Therapy isnt one size fits all.
People are unique, we all have different backgrounds, experiences, the way we relate to ourselves and others is all different so how can one model be 'better' than another?
For some people sitting across from a therapist and talking feels natural and for others they feel more able to express themselves creatively. The ways in which we feel safe enough to open up are all different and thats ok.
When we start to make blanket statements like
'this will heal your trauma' or 'this is better than that',
we move into something that feels far more promising and certain than therapy actually is.
Therapy isn’t a product or a quick fix.
It’s a relationship.
A process.
Maybe the question isn’t around which therapy is 'better' but 'what might help this person feel safe enough to explore what they need to, in a way that feels safe for them?'
For anyone who has sat in therapy and thought this 'should' be working ….but it hasn't, you aren't a failure and you didnt do it 'wrong'.
It might not have been the right fit, the right approach, the right person or the right timing.
