Our bodies and minds 🧘♂️💆
This is a very interesting topic, and I think many people are unaware of the consequences of holding emotions in our bodies.
Our bodies and minds are deeply connected, and emotions don’t just “live” in our thoughts – they often show up physically. When we experience stress, grief, anger, or even joy that we don’t fully express, the body can hold onto that energy as muscle tension, tightness, or discomfort. This is why people often say they “carry stress in their shoulders” or get a “knot in their stomach” when anxious.
Here’s how massage helps with emotions stored in the body:
1. Releasing muscle tension linked to emotions
• Emotions can trigger the nervous system, causing muscles to contract and stay tense.
• Massage works directly on those tight muscles, encouraging them to relax, which in turn helps the nervous system calm down.
2. Improving circulation and energy flow
• Stuck emotions can feel heavy or blocked in the body. Massage improves blood flow, lymphatic drainage, and energy movement, which helps the body process and release those feelings.
3. Activating the parasympathetic nervous system
• Massage stimulates the “rest and digest” state, helping the body shift out of fight-or-flight mode.
• In this calmer state, suppressed emotions often surface in a safe, gentle way.
4. Supporting emotional awareness
• During massage, people often notice where they’ve been holding tension (jaw, chest, stomach, hips).
• This awareness can help them connect emotions to physical sensations, making it easier to process feelings rather than keep them “stuck.”
5. Encouraging emotional release
• Sometimes clients may feel a wave of sadness, relief, or even tears during or after a massage. This is completely normal—it’s the body letting go of what it’s been holding.
Common areas emotions are held:
• Shoulders & neck → stress, responsibility, overwhelm
• Jaw → frustration, unspoken words
• Chest → grief, heartache
• Stomach → anxiety, worry
• Hips → suppressed emotions, trauma, fear
Massage isn’t just physical—it gives the body permission to soften, release, and heal both physically and emotionally.
