During Children’s Mental Health Week, it is important to recognise that children and young people experience grief in unique and individual ways. Their responses to loss are shaped by age, understanding, personality, life experience and the support around them.
Children may move in and out of their grief rather than staying with it continuously. They might feel intense sadness one moment and appear settled or distracted the next. This does not mean the loss has been forgotten - it reflects how children often process difficult emotions in smaller, manageable pieces.
Grief in children can present emotionally, physically and behaviourally. Feelings may include sadness, anger, anxiety, guilt, confusion, fear or numbness. Some children may struggle with concentration or sleep, become withdrawn, show changes in behaviour, or seek reassurance more frequently. Others may express grief through play, creativity or questions that return over time.
There is no fixed timeline for grief, and reactions may change as a child grows and gains a deeper understanding of the loss. What children often need most is consistent, honest and compassionate support - adults who listen without judgement, allow emotions to be expressed safely, and reassure them that their feelings are valid. Creating space for questions, acknowledging uncertainty, and maintaining routines can help children feel secure while they grieve.

At Pete’s Dragons, we recognise that when grief is met with understanding and patience, children and young people can be supported to make sense of their experiences at their own pace. 🧡

None of us are built to have a 'constant' setting. Some days we may have the energy to feel upbeat and happy, other days, we might just need to let the curve be what it is. And every day looks different because we are human, not robots. It’s important we give ourselves permission to exist anywhere on that spectrum.

If you're finding that you're having more bad days than good, head to our website. There you’ll be able to find advice, information and services that could help.
