Narrow doorways - the bane of my life! ๐Ÿšช
UK buildings, especially old ones, just weren't built with wheelchairs in mind. Here's what helps me:

Measure your chair width with your hands on the wheels (you're wider than you think!)
Go straight through, not at an angle
Take armrests off if they come off
Open the door properly and don't rush it
If it really won't work, ask about widening it - that's a fair request

Don't force it and damage your chair or the walls. There's usually a way through.
What works for you? Let me know! ๐Ÿ‘‡

If you push your own wheelchair, you really need to get some gloves!
They'll stop your hands getting blisters and calluses, and they give you a much better grip on the wheels. Get fingerless ones so you can still use your hands properly, and make sure they've got padding in the palms - makes a massive difference.
Some have rubber grips which are brilliant when it's raining. And honestly, in winter they're a lifesaver when those metal rims are absolutely freezing.
Decent gloves stop your hands getting so tired and help prevent injuries. They don't cost much and they last for ages. Treat them as proper essential kit, not just something nice to have. Your hands do loads of work - look after them!

That range on your chair's box? It's under PERFECT conditions. Real life hits different!
๐Ÿ”‹ What drains your battery faster:

Hills & rough terrain
Cold weather โ„๏ธ
Aging batteries
High speeds
Heavier weight

๐Ÿ’ก My survival rules:
โœ… Always plan with 25% margin
โœ… Know your charging spots
โœ… Carry a mobile charger
โœ… Never trust maximum range
Running out of power away from home isn't just inconvenient - it's potentially dangerous. Plan smart, stay safe! ๐Ÿ’ช

Travelling with a wheelchair can be easy with the right preparation โ™ฟโœˆ๏ธ

Take photos of your wheelchair before flying, label it clearly, and secure loose parts. Carry basic tools if you use air-filled tyres. Always check airline rules and book assistance early.

Every wheelchair has a weight limit - and it's there for your safety. Exceeding it puts serious stress on the frame, wheels, and components, leading to premature wear or even structural failure.

Check your chair's maximum user weight (you'll find it on a label on the frame or in your manual). Remember, this isn't just about your body weight - factor in bags, shopping, medical equipment, and anything else you're carrying throughout the day.

If you're near or over the limit, don't worry - we're here to help. Let's talk about bariatric options designed for higher weight capacities. The right chair keeps you safe, comfortable, and mobile.

Your safety matters. Let's find the perfect fit together.

Save Your Back: The Smart Way to Load a Wheelchair ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ช

Lifting a manual wheelchair into the car boot doesn't have to be a struggle. Whether you are a full-time carer or helping a loved one occasionally, using the right technique is essential to preventing injury. Here are a few quick tips to make the process smoother:

๐Ÿ”น Lighten the Load: Before you lift, always remove the footrests, armrests (if detachable), and the cushion. Every kilogram counts! ๐Ÿ”น Fold & Lock: Ensure the chair is fully folded. If it has a lock to keep it shut, use it so it doesn't spring open mid-lift.
๐Ÿ”น Mind Your Posture: Stand close to the car. Squat down by bending your kneesโ€”never bend from your waist. Keep your back straight as you lift.
๐Ÿ”น Use Leverage: Lift the chair by the frame (not the wheels) and rest the front wheels on the lip of the boot. Then, simply slide it the rest of the way in rather than carrying the full weight.

Cold winter weather can affect battery performance. โ„๏ธ
If your powered chair does not travel as far on frosty days, this is completely normal.

Store your chair somewhere warm when not in use, keep the battery fully charged, and plan shorter journeys in freezing conditions. Once the battery warms up indoors, normal performance will return.

Stay warm, stay mobile, and remember winter will pass.

Got a Spare Wheelchair? Here's How to Store It Properly
If you've got a wheelchair you don't use daily, proper storage makes all the difference.
Storage essentials:

Keep it somewhere dry - damp garages and sheds cause rust and mould

Indoor storage is best when possible
Give it a thorough clean before storing
Slightly inflate the tyres (but not fully)
Cover with an plastic sheet to keep dust off
Check on it every month or so

A well-stored chair is ready to go when you need it - whether for backup or lending to family members.

Don't skip the seatbelt! If your wheelchair has a positioning strap or seatbelt, make it part of your routine โ€“ especially in powered chairs or when someone's pushing you. It's not about being held back; it's about staying secure and preventing accidents on hills, ramps, or rough ground. And here's something crucial: your wheelchair belt doesn't replace a proper car seatbelt when you're in a vehicle. Think of them as partners in keeping you safe!
