🦻🔄 The frustrating cycle of ear wax and hearing aids! 🔄🦻

You wear hearing aids to improve your hearing, but for some, they can lead to more frequent earwax build-up. This can cause the hearing aids to whistle or become blocked, reducing their effectiveness and preventing them from improving your hearing as intended.

Regular cleaning and ear care can help manage this issue and keep your hearing aids working at their best.

🦻 Got Questions About Ear Wax Removal? We’ve Got Answers! 🦻

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get about ear wax removal:

Q: How long does it take?
A: The procedure usually takes about 15-30 minutes, depending on the amount of ear wax and the individual’s ear health. It's quick, efficient, and you’ll be hearing clearly in no time!

Q: How often should I get my ears cleaned?
A: Most ears are self-cleaning but for those who suffer with frequent wax build-up we recommend every 6-12 months. If you use hearing aids or experience frequent blockages, you may need more regular cleanings.

Q: Why do I need to use oil first?
A: Applying a few drops of oil (like olive or almond oil) each day in the week leading up to your appointment can soften the wax, making the removal process more comfortable for the patient.

Q: How many sessions are needed?
A: While one visit is usually sufficient, there are rare occasions when the wax hasn't softened enough for safe removal. In such cases, the patient may be asked to return after using oil for an additional week. Patients are only charged for a single visit.

👂 Choosing the right removal method for you

While our primary method of wax removal is microsuction, did you know that audiologists tailor ear wax removal based on individual needs? Several factors, such as ear health history, the consistency of your ear wax, and the depth of the wax build-up, determine which technique is most appropriate.

🔹 Ear Health History: If you’ve had ear infections, surgery, tinnitus or perforated eardrums, certain methods may not be safe for you. Audiologists consider your medical background to choose the safest and most effective approach.

🔹 Consistency of Wax: Ear wax can be hard, dry, soft or sticky. The consistency dictates which method is likely to be most effective.

🔹 Depth of Wax: Wax lodged deep in the ear canal requires extra care. Over-the-counter solutions can sometimes push wax further in than it would naturally go, making removal more complicated. Your Audiologist may use a combination of methods to remove this. In some cases, they may ask you to return for repeat treatment after a few days of oil use.

By selecting the right method, audiologists ensure safe, effective care tailored to your ear health needs. Always consult a registered professional for the best results!

Although many of us grew up using cotton buds to clean our ears, this common habit can actually cause more damage than you might think. Here's why it’s time to break the cotton bud routine:

Pushing Earwax Deeper: Instead of removing earwax, cotton buds often push it further into the ear canal. This can lead to a build-up of wax, known as impaction, which may result in hearing loss, discomfort, and even tinnitus (ringing in the ears).

Infections: Our ear canals are sensitive and lined with delicate skin. Inserting a cotton bud can irritate this skin, leading to small cuts or abrasions. These tiny injuries create the perfect environment for bacteria to grow, increasing the risk of ear infections. 🦠

Eardrum Damage: One of the most serious risks is the potential to perforate or damage the eardrum. The eardrum is a thin membrane, and a misjudged swipe with a cotton bud can cause tears or perforations, leading to hearing problems or even permanent hearing loss. 🩹

Disturbing the Ear’s Natural Cleaning Process: Earwax (cerumen) is there for a reason! It protects the ear canal from dirt, dust, and bacteria. Using cotton buds can disrupt the ear’s natural cleaning process, stripping away this protective layer and leaving your ears vulnerable to infections. Your ears are self-cleaning, and wax naturally works its way out of the ear without needing your help. 👂✨

Ear Canal Blockages: In some cases, people accidentally lodge cotton fibres deep into their ears. These fibres can cause painful blockages and may require professional removal.

If you feel like you have too much earwax or are experiencing discomfort, the best approach is to consult a healthcare professional.
