Newton Mearns Community First Responders

Newton Mearns Community First Responders Email : nmearnscfr@gmail.com Community First Responders are made up of volunteers who respond in their spare time.

They have been trained by the Scottish Ambulance Service and given an AED (automated external defibrillator) along with other medical equipment in order to implement emergency care outside of hospital. CFRโ€™s are dispatched at the same time as an ambulance in rural areas, or areas where an ambulance is unlikely to reach within the targeted time of 8 minutes.

Well done to our neighbouring Neilston co-ordinator Stephen. Very well deserved ๐Ÿ‘

Congratulations to Stephen Byars who has been recognised as Citizen of the Year 2024 for his lifesaving work as the dedicated coordinator of the Neilston & Uplawmoor Community First Responder Group, where his voluntary work has spanned across the past decade. ๐Ÿ†

As an integral part of the group since it started in 2014, Stephen maintains and manages many of the areaโ€™s public access defibrillators, going above and beyond to ensure that these crucial resources are readily available in the community, as well as selflessly giving most of his weekends to be available to respond to emergency calls across East Renfrewshire. ๐Ÿซถ

Well done Stephen, you're such a worthy winner of the Provost Award! ๐Ÿ‘

CPR and Defibrillator Training by St John Scotland at Clarkston Community Centre & Masjid Yusuf

Provost Mary Montague and Clarkston Community Centre organised a successful and enjoyable training session on CPR and Defibrillator training by St John Scotland. 21 people were trained including the Provost herself, along with local Councillor Katie Pragnell and Blair McDougall MP, local residents.

The defibrillator was purchased and installed at Clarkston Community Centre and Masjid Yusuf in partnership with the Provost's Community Defibrillator Fund and St John Scotland with support from Neilston & Uplawmoor First Responders.

The funding for this defibrillator was boosted by local resident Derek Milligan, who raised funds for the Provost's Community Defibrillator Fund after taking part in a 100 mile West Highland Way sponsored walk in memory of his friend Billy Partridge who died following a cardiac arrest.

Every week in Scotland, around 70 people have a cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public place. It is vital to phone 999 and start CPR as soon as possible and send someone to get the defibrillator which increases the best chance of survival if the defibrillator is used as soon as possible.

Provost Mary Montague and Clarkston Community Centre are working to help more local people access the defibrillator, if you would be interested in being trained on how to use the defibrillator, please send us an email at Clarkstonccm@gmail.com
