Breathing is a key part of Pilates, and it’s not just about getting oxygen — it actually helps your body move better.

In Pilates we use lateral rib breathing, where the ribs expand to the sides and back rather than pushing the stomach out. This allows the deep core muscles and pelvic floor to stay gently engaged to support the spine.

When you exhale slowly and with control, the deep abdominal muscles naturally switch on, helping stabilise the spine and control movement. That’s why you’ll often hear Pilates instructors cue the exhale during the effort part of an exercise.

Controlled breathing also helps stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system — the body’s “rest and recovery” system. This can help reduce stress, lower muscle tension, and allow your body to move more efficiently and feel calmer during exercise.

Good breath control can: • Improve core stability
• Reduce neck and shoulder tension
• Improve movement control
• Support the spine and protect the lower back
• Help the body relax through activation of the parasympathetic nervous system

This party blower is a fun way to show what a long, steady exhale should feel like. Instead of short, shallow breaths, Pilates encourages a controlled breath out, which helps engage the core and calm the nervous system at the same time.

Simple, but really powerful. 🎈

Your spine is strong, adaptable, and designed for movement 🦴

Back pain doesn’t always mean something is seriously wrong. In many cases, the spine simply needs the right support to move well again.

Physiotherapy, exercise, and treatments like deep tissue massage can help to:
• Reduce pain
• Improve mobility
• Release muscle tension
• Build strength and resilience

Movement is medicine for the spine — and with the right guidance, your body is incredibly capable of recovery.

If you’re struggling with back pain or stiffness, we’re here to help.

Introducing Shockwave Therapy
👋
Shockwave therapy is an evidence-based treatment designed to help reduce pain and stimulate healing in chronic tendon and soft tissue injuries.

By delivering low-energy pressure waves into damaged tissue, it helps to: ✔ Increase blood flow
✔ Stimulate tissue repair
✔ Reduce pain
✔ Support your body’s natural healing process.

Shockwave therapy can be effective for conditions such as:
• Plantar fasciitis
• Achilles tendinopathy
• Tennis / golfer’s elbow
• Patella tendinopathy
• Rotator cuff pain
• Shin splints

If you’ve been struggling with a long-standing injury that hasn’t improved, shockwave therapy could help.
