To avoid tooth decay we must remove the cause -acid. It may surprise you to know that coffee is an acidic drink! To help your teeth it is best to avoid multiple acid attacks a day to allow the demineralised teeth to recover from the acid attack. Therefore sticky sweets, buns , breads, crisps should be kept to a minimum. ‘Sucky’ sweets and ‘breath fresheners’ such as mints are a lot worse for your teeth than a square of chocolate that is eaten quickly and isn’t prolonging the length of time the sugar is in contact with your teeth. Sugar (and carbohydrates that convert to sugar in your mouth) + plaque (sticky film of bacteria) = acid formation. Acid demineralises enamel leading to painful cavities in the teeth. So top tip - Reduce the amount of time acid is in the mouth by avoiding regular sugary ,sticky snacks. Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste ( especially last thing at night when the saliva flow is less and not protecting the teeth) . Saliva helps protect the teeth by raising the ph in the mouth ( neutralises the acid which attacks the teeth) and also helps wash the food particles from the teeth ,preventing any carbohydrates turning to sugars and ‘feeding’ the bacteria in plaque -producing acid .Remember acid is the enemy !
Some information that you may or may not have been aware of -always good to have a reminder. Dental decay is totally preventable .
