What you need to know about TPO
With so much confusion and misinformation swirling around the industry we thought we would bust those myths and break it down so that nail techs have all the facts and facts only....
What is TPO? TPO is a photoinitiator. All UV gel nail products require a photoinitiator to trigger the hardening process of the gel. TPO was the most commonly used photoinitator due to its low propensity for yellowing, high reactivity rate, compatibility with various monomers and efficiency at curing in thick layers. It was said that there was no photoinitiator as effective as TPO which is why it was so widely used. TPO is allowed to be used in concentrations up to 5% in cosmetics in the UK.
How does TPO appear on an ingredients label or SDS? You will see it denoted as Trimethylbenzoyl-diphenylphosphine oxide OR Diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide. You will not see it denoted as TPO, this is an acronym.
Why is TPO being banned? TPO is being banned following a study performed on rats in Germany is 2020 that concluded that the exposure to TPO had caused reproductive toxicity. The rats in the study were fed 600 mg/kg of body weight every day for 10 days.
To put this into context, if you took a rat of 200g this would equate to 0.12g of TPO being ingested every day for 10 days. To compare this to nail products, an entire 25g jar of original formula Dura Gel contains 0.07g of TPO. For a human to be exposed to the same level of toxicity, a 60kg person would need to ingest 36,000mg (36g) everyday for 10 days, this would be the equivalent of 514 jars of original formula Dura gel eaten every day for 10 days.
Is TPO dangerous? The easiest way to frame this is to explain that TPO is only being banned in cosmetic products in the EU, NOT dental products. This means that there is a high likelihood that if you are based in the EU and go to get composite bonding or a UV cured filing that that will contain TPO, yes in your mouth! If TPO was dangerous its use entirely would have been banned. The study was specifically in relation to the ingestion of high amounts of TPO, tiny traces of TPO in UV cured products in contact with your nail in no way compares in terms of level of exposure.
Is TPO being banned due to allergy concerns? No! TPO is not classed as a common allergen but ofcourse it still has the potential to be sensitising to certain people, as is the case with the vast majority of chemicals.
Is TPO-L being banned? NO!!! The comparison of TPO to TPO-L is much like the comparison of HEMA to di-HEMA or HPMA, they share similar letters but are not the same chemcial. In TPO-L, one of the benzene rings found in TPO is replaced with an ethoxy group, this modification reduces the overall toxicity of the molecule while maintaining some of its photoinitiation properties.
Is TPO being banned in the UK? NO!!! This is the biggest piece of misinformation circling the industry just now. TPO is not being banned in the UK, only in the EU, the rest of the world is unaffected. Whilst there is discussion around a ban potentially happening in the UK, there is no current set plan or date. If a date was to be announced, we would expect that at least a years notice would be given, much like in the case of the EU.
Why are UK brands removing TPO? If TPO doesnt pose a threat and there is no current ban planned for the UK it may seem strange for UK brands to be moving towards removing TPO, however its all about future proofing. As there is a chance that the UK will follow suit and ban TPO in the future it makes sense for uK brands to future proof their products, not only this but the UK close proximity to EU countires geographically means that a portion of our business is to the EU and we want to be able to continue to supply these locations.
